Default 997S appears to be in good company

In the newest issue of Automobile Magazine, the Audi R8 is introduced in a brief comparo. Its "rivals": the Ferrari F430 and Porsche Carrera S. They call it "The 180mph Club". Nice. Especially since the 911 is about 1/2 the price of the Ferrari and at least $20k less than the R8. Plus it has a back seat!

The 911 has always been the yardstick against which all others are compared. Seems like R&T and C&D have also written comparisons between the Audi R8 and different 997 AWD NA variants. What they should be comparing the R8 to is the 997TT since they are the closest in price. But the 997 TT would blow the R8 away and that might not sell as many magazines.

IIRC, the article referred to the C2S as the "Coca Cola brand when it comes to sports cars". In other words, the benchmark against which all others are compared. 0-60 for our cars was reported at 4.4...with the R8 at 4.5 and the 430 at 4.0. Most impressively, our cars significantly outbraked, by four or five feet, both the R8 and 430.

Yep, once again here we go... comparing the orange against the apple for the sake of selling magazines. Anything with the name Porsche sells magazines. Would love a real comparison against the TT and R8. The Audi R8 (baby Lambo) would get a nosebleed!

Hope this isn't a repost, but here's the only comparo I"ve seen between the R8 and 997TT.

I'm a loyal Porsche owner and have never owned a Corvette, but this is not a great argument for us to be making considering that for about 1/2 the price of a 997S, the Corvette offers equal performance (atleast on paper, excluding feel). We've all read 911 vs vette comparos and kick and scream when they raise the price issue.

The real comparo is against the C4S, not the TT.

I've read both of the above mentioned comparos and of course many others on the 997. The constant throughout all is praise for the driving experience that generally no others can match. The steering is light and has excellent feedback, the power delivery is excellent, and the cars are nimble. Are there more powerful cars? Of course, but what does that really mean in day to day driving. I'm 36 years old and have no real interest in street racing. I surely don't want to damage the clutch or trans to provide I can pull away from some kid in new Mustang.

To me the most imortant aspect is the driving experience (including that its fairly comfortable as I use it as a daily driver) and on that subject these cars can't be beat.

One of my law partners owns an '06 Mustang GT that's been lowered and supercharged to 550 hp. It still doesn't come close to our driving experience and only until we get near triple digits did it pull away from my prior 997S.

Anyone with the recent Automobile Mag should check one of the editorials about the base Cayman and how great it is. The writer notes he doesn't feel the 245hp is inadequate, but rather the driving exp is great.

I've owned succesive cars always wanting more power: Mazda Miata, then Infiniti G35 coupe, then Volvo S60R, then Audi S4, then 05 997S, and now 07 997. Once I got rid of the Miata and not until I got the 997S did I realize it was about the drive and not the power. The Miata was great and the experience was better than all the other cars save the P-cars. The 997s are superb.

AND WE HAVE 4 SEATS which I actually use from time to time.
