I like the electronic ones, like Accutire, because they self calibrate for air temp and elevation. And they are cheap.

I have a Longacre digital I got for around $40. I also have a fluid filled analog gauge that works just as good too.

This is a topic I have been wanting to start for a few weeks....been too busy but I need to chime in.
I have 5 different guages. 2 digital, 2 needle, and one of the old school stick type. ALL 5 give a different reading from 1-4 lbs and anywhere in between.
Which one do I believe?

Thanks

digital is more accurate.

if you really want to get down to the nitty gritty you need to have your gauges calibrated once a month by a professional cal lab. Who has time and money for that!

Personally 1-4 lbs diff is nothing for daily driving. I dont know about racing thought.

The accuracy in measurement is entirely dependent on the accuracy (read repeatability) of the measurement device, regardless of calibration. You could have a crappy pressure transducer type with a digital readout that is worse in accuracy than the cheapo spring type that are given away as freebies.

Many people are fooled by a digital display into thinking that a measuring device must therefore be accurate because they can accurately read the numbers in the display compared to trying to read a graduated scale and make mental estimates of interpolation complicated by the occasional parallax in an analog gauge.

My experiencnce with the Accu-Gage® fully geared, solid brass precision movement with bronze bourdon tube has been identical readings from guage to guage.

Always nice to see identical readings

Check out this product comparison:

I bought the Race X Professional Tyre Gauge and have been very pleased with the quality and ease of use.

You're right, though. Reminds me of the alignment shop where I worked in high school in the 80's which was known far and wide for perfecting the art of static+dynamic wheel balancing & alignments. Funny because while all the competitor shops were installing computer balancers, we were still exclusively using only the bizarre looking mechanically intricate vintage 1950's equipment.

Hey Paul, how's it going? How's the good ol' NE Ohio area these days? I plan to be back later this year.

One of the required courses as an undergraduate at the University of Akron () was a course in measurements. It was very enlightening. I really enjoyed it as it liberated me somewhat of my ignorance on the subject.

Oh, and for the obligatory post of the thread that already covered this subject (for those looking for more information):

Default Here is the racing industry gold standard

Hi,

I have a fascination and fetish for air pressure gauges, and own nearly all the best ones on the market.

The Intercomp 360045 is the reference standard. I test all my other ones against it, and none are within 0.5 psi. Next best is either the Longacre digital at $165, or their 4" analog. Both are good, but read from 0.5 to 1.5 psi off.

The Intercomp is temp, altitude and humidity compensated. It goes through an internal calibration check every time you turn it on. It is like handling a surgical instrument and makes everything else seem like a toy. It includes a 20" Goodyear hose with a great air chuck, and a nice hard plastic case. It costs $295 direct from Intercomp. Accuracy is 0.1% of readout, ie, 0.03 at 30psi. You cannot buy a better gauge.

In my opinion all the rest of the digitals are the same, Griots, Porsche, Accutire, etc.

Now that I got my GT3, which is so sensitive to pressures, I decided to buy the best I could buy. I spent weeks researching this. I owned the Longacre for the past year, and it is certainly a nice gauge, but if you are spending $165, just go all the way.

I see it this way:

Accutire, $20
Porsche digital, $25
Longacre 4" %75
Longacre digital $165
Intercomp

Calibration check - If you have AMA motorcycle races in your area, the Dunlop tent has a master gauge set up. You plug in your gauge and compare. I believe its set to 32. And the races are a good time.

Don't know if any of the 4 wheel tire manufacturers offer this same service.
