That comparison is an absolute nonstarter. Anyone who reads that article and nods their head saying "yeah, that's right, the 997 is just another advancement of the Porsche brand," is a person without much cognitive understanding of either design or engineering philosophy.

Hey, it's your loss. If you're doltish enough to buy into that crap, I'm sure Porsche has a brand new 997 waiting for you. Ray, just accept the fact that there are those of us who are discerning enough to see the huge chasm between the old cars and the new, and we won't be fooled by silly articles like this one, into ignoring what we know to be true.
Hilarious. I drive both a 993 and 997. The 993 is a great classic Porsche, but 993 owners think that 997s are just a market driven piece of crap! Most have never driven a 997 but you know, that doesn't stop them from having misconception after misconception.

To each his own. When I bought my 997 the feelings of the 993 crowd were not important to me. I am sure that they are not too concerned about what I think about the 993. Bottom line, is I am happy. I hope they are too.

Your avatar pic is pretty telling though - look how much bigger the 997 is than the 993. I love the 993 - it's a gorgeous car, but there's no way I'd give up the 997S for one. Hopefully I can get a 993 to supplement the 997.

OK what we know to be true is that Porsche has made some pretty overall great cars with each model having its unique issues but the one thing we have in common no matter if you drive a 356, Boxster, 944, 914, 928, 996 or 997 is that you have bought one of the great cars for its time. Today a Honda Civic can probably drive faster than a 356 as a 996 or 997 will beat the average non modified 993 but who cares; you drive a Porsche that you can be proud of. Being a 996 C4 Convertible owner I would love to trade it in on a new 997 C4S Cab but the difference is just not worth it to me, or should I say my wife! But no matter I still love my car and have had a blast with the recent good weather in Germany, drove it 160 MPH on the autobahn yesterday. So let the model zealots believe what they may, the majority of us know the truth and that is that we have a passion for cars and our choice is a Porsche! Safe and Happy Holidays to all, Merry Christmas!

Texas -

I think it needs to be mentioned that, from an outside observer, you and Pcar have some kind of vendetta going on. For numerous threads, over the course of months (at least), you guys have been going toe to toe on the 993 vs 997 comparisons and more.

In light of this, I think it is somewhat unfair to take Pcar's own post and attribute it to what "the 993 guys think of 997s". I for one am strongly considering the purchase of a 997 in the next year or two (perhaps the 997.5 variant). It's unnecessary to apply the opinions of a few 993 owners to the whole lot.

Why stir the pot?

I am sure it is more finances than anything that keeps the 993 guys from the 997's.

All that matter is that everyone is happy with what they have.

Default When I bought my car the 997 was my first choice

and the 993 was my second choice. These cars are different in a lot of ways, but they are still both Porsche's and both of these cars will perform better then 99% of the vehicles available. I have loved Porsches since I was young and regardless of the age or model I still stop and look. A friend of mine just traded in his 1981 928 for a 1990 C4 Targa (964). I could not wait to go for a ride, as it is a Porsche (on that I have dreamt about for years). I for one don't understand why some 993 owners need to suggest that the 997's are inferior cars...mine has lived up to all my expectations (and then some).

Got to go, I have that urge to drive it again!

I love driving my classic, and yes, its a classic, 993. It was my dream car growing up and love the tradition of the aircooled Porsche. I frequent the 993 board and dufuses like pcar are alway railing on new Porsches as some sort of a yuppie status symbols that is built like a Lexus (I never understood how this is a slight) with no soul. Nevermind that its probably the best all around sports car that is offered today. pcar even claims that a 993 will outhandle a 997 TT! I got tired to the bashing so I stand up for the 997. Of course they won't have any of it over there.

Being a rather tall guy I appauld Porsche for take guys of my size into account when designing the 997 model. Main reason why I bought a 2006 997S, I fit very well, finally!

i have spent some time in the 997 and feel its a wonderful modern car..i have owned a few boxsters and a 993 and currently a 87 911.i do feel that the new cars are better BUT there is something lost. The one thing i hate that porsche does is that...to protect the 911 they underpower the rest of their line up...BUT they give it that horrible cayenne interior,OR in the case of the 996 they share just about everything with the boxster..
i drove the cayman s and liked it..why not give it the same hp as the 911..so they make a car but in reality could be better..at least the 911 is the best they can make..i do feel that the build quality in the newer cars is not as good..my 20 year old 911 is bulletproof..it is by no means the performer of new,but there is something special about it that screams german..can you really say that about the 997..maybe it doesnt really matter..i wish they did more to seperate the 911 from the rest of the line...give it its own interior..not shared with their suv..i am starting to like the 996 interior again..i WIll own a 997 someday but ido hope they make some changes..j

It would just be nice if we can be all Porsche enthusiasts without having to degrade a particular model to make your ownership seem special.

BTW, what part of the Cayenne is shared with the 997?
