there is a resemblance but they didn't take the Cayenne interior and stick it into the 997.

I own a 997. I've driven 993 and 996.
I must say if I had a choice to pick again and money is not part of the decision making I would still pick a 997.
993 has a raw go-kart feeling which is very fun to drive. But the 997 is the state of the art.
it's much faster, shifts better, handles better and has all the technical tools and gadgets needed in the year 2006.
993 is a great classic but the 997 is definitely the best 911 ever built.
4-5 years from now they will come out with 998 which will be faster and more advanced than 997.
It will be a better car because of all the engineering and design evolutions.
993 will remain forever as a classic car. will the 997 be a classic porsche?
this remains to be seen.

However, I had a Touareg for a year, and it does share some very obvious interior parts with the Cayenne.
The triangular steering wheel and overlapping set of five dials are obvious design cues the current Porsche line all share, but the 997's dashboard shape, AC vents, window switches, and circular sport steering wheel are very retro-911.
