I plan on getting a manual - because the wife won't be able to drive it.

The painted plastic on the tiptronic shifter is wearing thin.

Wish I had gotten the 6-speed....

Anyone driven an Audi with the DSG? I hear it's amazing. Maybe when/if Porsche goes with that I'd consider it. Maybe.

DSG is fantastic. Makes the 997's Tiptronic feel like a Powerglide.

The bottom line is a tiptronic is still a torque converter based automatic and will always have that kind of feel being as such. If you are looking to drive a manual, it is not a substitute. There are gearboxes like the F1 system in Ferraris and E-shift in the Gallardo that are actually automatic-clutching sequential manual gearboxes that really are a true manual. The automatic shifting function on those boxes is more of a limp-home mode than something that could be driven daily. The tiptronic is better off left in drive for those that don't like to shift. I personally have made many greatful comments to my dealer for under standing this since they added manual Boxsters to the service fleet and I no longer have to dread the tiptronic boxes in Cayenne service loaners.

Good points there. The SMG and F1 type transmissions are manual transmission that can occasionally masuerade quite poorly as an automatic. The tip is an automatic transmission that occassionally quite poorly can masquerade as a manual. I have a 6sp, and would not want a tip, but if they ever come up with an SMG or DSG or F1 type I will get that.

"I have driven the future and its name is DSG"
Audi DSG is an amazing thing to use. In five years every automoblle manufacturer will offer their take on it as an option and in ten years it'll be the only 'box in town. Everyone can be a racer and everyone's beloved can tootle home in 'D' after dark.
(Interesting, though to see how it lasts; Audi's TT DSG has only been around a couple of years and I'd be keen to know what the service/glitch record looks like.)

As someone that has to have a automatic due to the loss of my left leg a few years ago I have a Tip in my 06 C2S. Had a 6speed in my 02 BoxsterS and that was fun. I can't wait till Porsche steps up and puts in a auto-clutch manual sequencial transmission like the Ferrari F1 and new Audi DSG.

Today I found myself in stop and go traffic on the expressway. I was shocked, shocked, that while only going two miles per hour the transmission stayed in second gear.

Why oh why did I get a tip?

Since I drive a tip and that means I don't know how to drive a real car I have to ask: does it come with driving lessons? I understand that there is an extra pedal on the floor. Do you work that with your hand or your foot???

I'm not a race car driver but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Even worse, those dog slow Cayenne V6 service loaners always start in 2nd unless you manually select 1st at every light. They won't downshift to 1st even under WOT on their own. I almost got killed merging into traffic when I discovered this.

I don't know about the Cayenne but on the 997S, that is simply not true. My tip downshifts to 1 when I mash the accelerator pedal. Everytime. It is one of the advantages of an automatic system, to downshift 2 gears or more in response to WOT faster than a manual car.

Tip outsells the stick almost 2 to 1 so they must be doing something right.

What are the differences between the Tiptronic and the Tiptronic S anyways??
