I've been working a trade for my 05 997S Cab with a $118,000.00 sticker and all it is bringing for trade is $77,000.00 to a high of $84,000.00

A $34,000.00 - $41,000.00 hit for a one year old car with 6100 miles is not a top re-seller to me....

Those expensive options are what kills you. If you option a cab up to 118k you better be prepared to live with that car for years (unless you're Steve Forbes). Compare that to a base 997 with little or no extras. It will depreciate 21k on the open market over 3 years.

Of course, on a trade you always get the shaft, except for the sales tax benefit.

come on now!
that is not true!
a dealer would have to get the car at wholesale value vs. the price of the new vehicle, to make it worth doing the trade.
they are in the business for profit, not to turn cars at cost.
if he gave full value then he would have another unit he would have to sell just to recoup the profit from one!
you can always sell it yourself to get retail value!
don't expect a dealer to do the job for you and not profit!

Ben,--a friend of mine said that they're having reliability issues with the Mini-Coopers. Have you heard anything on that?

The early ones they had a problem with. BMW immediately corrected the issues and since then almost bullet proof.

Jeff, regarding resale your talking like a Porsche salesman. Most 997 are being heavily discounted used and discounted new. Only in certain area of the country are new 997's hold their original MSRP. That will change when the Turbo and GT3 are available for sale. Look buy the car for performance and forget about value. Porsche is going to make out financially and buyer's emotionally with lighter wallets.

BTW, according to the recent issue of Autocar, the Cayman is also experiencing sluggish sales. To prop up sales, they may introduce the RS model sooner than later.

Sorry, these car are tanking and will continue to tank on resale value.
There were 13 S Cabs sitting on 1 dealers lot yesterday.
Porsche is flooding the market with tha 997's.
The supply and demand advantage is gone.
Thanks Porsche...you Suck!

BTW wait until the 997TT hits the streets. Your resale values on the base 997 and 997S will plummet even more. Hey, its your money. Believe what you want to believe. It doesn't change facts.
I have no solution for an individual who naively loads up a 997S cab with $27,000 in options and expects to recover anything close to purchase price on the expensive frills. It is also irrational to expect not to get pulverized relying solely on dealer trade-in quotes! Who are they kidding?!

My personal anecdote contradicts, and I'm sure I am not alone: landed early on the list for a 997TT, sold my '05 997S coupe at 7K miles (orig. MSRP $92K) a month ago through cars.com for $81K to someone halfway across the country, works great if you exercise a little patience.
Accounting for my original discount I took a hit of $7.5K on a 15-month-old car, or 8.5% depreciation. If you do not go crazy on cosmetic options at the outset, if you pamper your 997 as it deserves and have a couple weeks' patience at resale time, you won't lose >10% per year.

Vancouver83, yeah I've seen several pre-owned 997S high $60's, cars with minimal options which could be had new for $80K anywhere outside Calif. What I have not seen is an accident free pre-owned Full Leather, Bose, sport chrono 997S with average miles for less than $75K.

Nick (nberry) quoted facts are largely wishful fabrications, he has pursued his troll agenda obssessively, pump his F-car value by denigrating Porsche. Author of some real intellectual gems, aim to nip this in the bud and maintain Rennlist as a first class refuge from such childishness.

So I guess the lesson to be learned is don't buy a used 911 (or any of the rest).

The only thing you nipped in the bud is your puny intellect.

You asked me to provide evidence of the 30% loss in value of a 997S and you would write check. I provided you with the car and now where is your check?

There is nothing worst than phony acting high and mighty (show me and I will write check) on a Chat site. And you have the ***** to call me a troll?

Funny thing;

Last night I was leaving the offfice late, about 9:15 and pulled a soft drift on the ramp to 88 E, jumped over two lanes for the I-Pass and suddenly there was a 360 Stradale on my left screaming along in 4th I would guess. We were side-by-side for about a mile since traffic wouldn't allow anything else.

Nice sound, pretty car. In about 10 sec. I decided I had a better ride for my purpose.

Nick, I could buy two 430's tomorrow and not worry about it. But I honestly think I have the correct vehicle for my needs.

Went topless today for the first time.

I'm reasonibly sure the Ferrari guy will take a bath too when he goes to sell. I've only ever made money on two cars I've owned. I had one of the first SL's in Chicago when they just changed over to the recent body (a toad is a toad is a toad...) and I bought a Testarosssa in 88 right before Il Commodore took his dirt nap and the prices briefly went Gonzo.

Reality is this; if you want an investment, don't buy cars.

Agreed, Allegretto. I can't even believe Nick's postings. He'll bash the 997 S til his head caves in. He has a right to his own opinion though. Like I freaking care if I lose 10k off of the lot on my new S, and more money over the years. BIG DEAL. If you're not wealthy enough to not care, you shouldn't EVER consider buying a 100k car. Anyone even posing an argument for auto appreciation is a nut.

Why do the moderators continue to allow Nick to post here? I come here to relax and discuss cars, not defend my purchase from an agenda-driven troll.

You know Jeff, I NEVER bet anyone I would buy any CGT or its value. I am not certain what the value of of the CGT will be a year ( and yes it could be around $225,000) from now but I am confident it will be less than 30-40% of its MSRP. This is Porsche's supercar which you have been threatening to buy ever since you started to post on Porsche sites.

I suggest you demonstrate your sincerity and credibity by doing so. Otherwise. it would be appropriate not to lead people into believing your buying one based on the several CGT question you posted expressing an intent to purchase.

I don't want to throw you in with Carbon Ted as a phony( I called his bluff and showed him to be a two bit blow hard) so I suggest you put up or shut up.
