I debated on it went with then without and ended up with. I like it do not feel any of some of the described problems like being notchy or hard to get into first gear. The stock unit on the 997 is good also IMO, and if I didn't end up with it on the order I probably would just leave it mainly because I don't like having people work on my cars.

I ordered the short shifter and have been driving it for only a few days now (I picked up my 997s less than a week ago) but it is terriffic. I have not experienced any of the notchyness or stiffness that some have had concerns about. I'm in chicago so these are my impressions even in the cold. If the shifter gets better with age as some on the forum have indicated, it will be unreal. Bottom line the porsche shifter is very good.

Go Factory SS Kit. They were having problems with the B&M.

I love mine. I recently test drove a Cayman without the SS and man the shifts were long.

My SS was a bit notchy when it was new but it sure has settled in quite well.

There are numerous discussions regardig this subject on the various web discussion sites.
There is nothing wrong with just replacing the factory stick with the B&M shifter.
The answer to your question depends largely on who will do your installation.

If you plan on installing it yourself , the factory unit is a little easier.

The B&M shifter installation requires breaking the factory bushings in the shifter housing and replacing them with the B&M equipment .
The factory shifter comes as a complete unit and replaces the standard shifter .All yo do is disconnect two cables from one and reinstall them on the other.

If you are interested ,take a look at the B&M installation instructions below.

(If you install the factory unit , you can disregard at least half of the instructions )

I went with the OEM SS kit, available from Brandywine Porsche for as cheap as $289 (ebay). Highly recommend it, unbelievable when rowing gears at speed.

I'll second the Brandywine option. Great service, price and performance.

Counterpoint: Maybe all will disagree but I prefer the std. I avoided the short shifter because the std one is so damn good and have heard that the short one is a bit too notchy at times.

I disagree that it's too long a throw. I've driven older porsche's and other cars that have had much longer throws that seem much too long without good reason for it. To me, the std shifter on the C2S seems just right and more organic than the times I've driven the short shifter cars.

What you are referring to looks like the B&M shift lever .
The Porsche factory shifter is a complete unit ,replacing the entire shifter housing ( I tried to attach a picture it says the file is too big )
I can send you a picture if you post your E-mail .
The hardest part of the installation is removing the center console .
After having done it once , I would say it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to do yourself.
The only problem I had was getting the shift **** off . Other than that , there is really nothing to it .
You do NOT get any instructions with the factory unit , but you can use the B&M instructions referred to in a previous link above .
If you DO elect to just change the lever , I suggest you install the kit in a factory unit . That way , you can keep driving in case you screw it up .

You can buy one from someone who has it lying around if they installed the factory short shifter ( like me ) and then sell yours to the next guy .
