Well, the 993's hour glass shape is way more pronounced, especially on the S and Turbos. Wonder how the 997 4 and 4s will fare compared to the 993. Weird thing is, his C4S will get beat by the 997's in a straight line anyways, so don't know what he's talking about.

With respect to glaffy’s original dilemma, I think the appropriate course of action is to indulge and have both, of course.

I know but gotta say one more thing...

At least we all agree that the 993 is a classic shape, and it appears many of us think the 997 is the evolution of that shape, but I think the 996 is by far technically superior to the 993...

So, the 997 is the best of both the 993 and the 996, what do they call it... Oh yea, Evolution!!!

Guys sorry for having my own taste and an opinion but guess what, I do. I am not trying to turn this into a troll thread.
Some numbers I've seen pop up just since I posted sound like car and driver crap. The fact is that the new 997 carrera is a joke. A chipped Audio S4 can take it, the RS6, the whole lot of amg Mercedes line up, BMW M3, 5 and the new Z06. Come on get your head out of the exhaust smoke and see the reality.
Some people are so damn stupid I am not comparing the high tech 997 to my old car, though back in 2002 it could at least stay up with most of the competion now the 997 is light years behind the comp.
This guy is thinking of getting rid of a classic for something that in 5 years won't be even worth the same amount as what his almost 10 year old car is worth today?

And I am glad you have your own opinion!

It would be a pretty crappy, boreing world if we all shared the same opinions!

Ditto on the Amen! (Toomey, did you just come back from a revival with AeroSmith or something? I like the enthusiastic spirit! )

Yes, differing opinions are indeed welcome. Especially those with some semblance of intelligence and rational basis. Gibberish nonsense we can do without! ... Sheesh!

Yes we are the X51 brothers and we are praying all the time that our cars show up with the X51 option actually on the car.

Amen to you too Brother Ben.

Hallelujah! … Sure, I'll become a holy roller too if it'll get my car back the way it was!

I love the 993 had a 1997 Coupe, my 997S is a great car and I don't think there are very many S4s, M3s or Z6s that will even keep up with it in the hands of a well trained driver. Maybe jumper5836 should head down to Alabama and learn how well the 997 can be driven.

Many thanks for all the replies.

Although there is something nice about owning a model which, because it is out of production, can never be superceded by an improved version of the same model, technology moves on and it can't be ignored.

Had I owned a 996, I would have had less hesitation about buying a 997 to replace it.

Owning a 993 makes life more difficult, particularly as it has never gone wrong and looks so pretty. Nevertheless, I think the 997 looks even better and obviously goes much better.

As much as I would like to have both, I live in central London and both cars would sit on the street; I already had the teardrops stolen from my 993 a few months ago.

The best advice I think would be to enjoy the 993 until the prices of used 997s fall to a more affordable level. At the moment, the UK Official Porsche Centres are selling them at or very close to list. Another 12-18 months should do it...Can I wait that long for a seal grey 997S with sport design wheels???

Thanks again - very entertaining advice!

Do what makes you happy. Who cares about whats 0.2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile, or who goes around a track faster... do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do. If you feel you would enjoy driving the 997 more than you enjoy your 993.. get it! You only live once. Who cares about history and collectors etc.. these cars are meant to be driven on the street so thats what you should worry about.
