What would you do in the following situation:
You own a very pretty 1997 993 Carrera 4 in a desirable colour scheme (arctic silver/black) with all the desirable options (18'' turbo alloys, lowered suspension, etc). The car is totally reliable and has more than adequate power for public roads. Being a 993, the car draws many admiring glances and you feel smug knowing it is the last of the air-cooled 911s.
Let's say, however, that you recently test drove a 997S and it occurred to you that the 997 was a marked improvement in a number of areas over the 993, in particular the turn of speed and even possibly aesthetically.
Would you:
1. Do nothing and accept that there will always be something better and enjoy the fact that you own a modern classic?
2. Upgrade your 993 so that its performance could almost match that of a base 997 if not a 997S (perhaps by shedding some weight and taking the engine out to 3.8 litres)?
3. Exchange your 993 for a 997 or 997S (on the basis that no amount of modifications to your 993 could possibly turn it into a car that is inherently as good as a 997)?

Just keep the 993 - you're right it's a classic. If it's not doing it for you though, wait until the 997 GT3 comes out and then pick up a used 996 GT3. Or if you have less money to burn add a Honda Civic for everyday driving. Don't worry about the 997 - it's going to be around for a long time. You can let all the hotshots get bored with it and then pick it up cheap a year or so from now.

I'd switch to a 997S with the all leather interior. You'll be glad you did.

This is very good advice IMO.
