According to the trip computer I've been averaging a little over 20 mpg; however, then I go to a DE and it dips considerably.

Well, for one thing, it's 3.8 liters vs. 3.6, and the throttle is a lot more responsive (read, higher revving) than the '02, especially if you've got Sport Chrono and are running in sport mode. Just my uneducated guess.

997S with less than 2000 miles is getting 15 to 16 MPG around town and 22 to 24 MPG highway with less than conservative driving. Used 2 quarts oil in 1800 miles.

Brain,

you spend more time in your car than with your wife!

Check your tire pressure, use super unleaded.

Has anyone else wondered why the gearing in 6th is so high? You'd think they would want it to be taller to increase mileage. It seems to tick over at about 3000 rpm @ 60mph. At that speed in my Touareg it's barely over 2000rpm. Maybe being taller wouldn't let you hit the top speed in 6th?

No one else has wondered that. If your rpm is 3000 at 60 mph. you are in 4th gear and not 6th. I know that you're in the 'show me" state, but I am too far away to show you.

Must have mistyped AGAIN. At 3000 rpm's in 6th gear your speed should be at least 75 mph with stock 18 inch wheels. If you have taller wheels or tires, your speed will be even faster.

After about 7k miles, average per the computer is about 17mpg with an average speed of 28mph (this is LA, afterall). No long trips so far, and I've noticed 12-13 in purely stop/go/jackrabbit starts/etc. That's with a Tiptronic.
