Default Radar detector issues

Just became the proud papa of a 997S (Gt Silver) and have some questions concerning radar detectors.

valentine 1 or escort 8500?

How hard is it to hard-wire it yourself?

I have heard that Porsche has a "coating" on the inside of the windshield that can be damaged by suction cups?

Anybody?

I'll be the first to suggest you do a search, and you will come up with endless discussions about radar detectors. Having read most of them at one time or another, I'd say the V1 is the most popular on rennlist, but there are plenty of Escort fans to. I have a V1 and love it.

I've never heard of any issues with coatings on the inside of the windshield and I have never noticed any problems on my almost year-old 997S.

Congrats on the new 997S. Please post pictures (a "mandatory" tradition); anyway, I'd love to see it in GT Silver.

Use Passport 8500 ("blue") hardwired to fuse box . Positioned just on right side of rear view mirror w/ suction cups. Cant tell the difference between 65mph and 75mph in a car capable of 182 can you? Directions for install using optional hardwire kit: Plug hot wire into fuse box (I choose optional rear wiper fuse (empty) + locate nearest ground (any metal bolt or screw making contact with body and secure). Tuck wire using plastic credit card gently working your way up door edge to driver side pilliar then tucking wire gently up along headliner on top of front windshield. Plug telephone jack in, done. Approx time to install 15 - 20 minutes. If you have to know the direction of radar signal get the Valentine one.

I have the Passport SRX installed professionally. The kit and install was about $1500 and it's awesome. I have the 8500 installed in my Lexus and it's also very good.

Here are some pics... Passport Pics

You might check with your dealership to find out if they're capable of installing radar/laser in your car. My dealership does and though it's expensive, the absence of ugly wires or cables along with the way the Passport system works is nice. The actual control box for the system is in the console, there's a light that flickers situated in the dash below the dials and a mute button that's installed next to the gear shift lever on the console (it is always next to your right hand to press when radar/laser go off when driving past electric store doors, etc.). I'll try to post photos of mine.

I think both make decent detectors. Both have a following. For me, once you get used to the "arrows" on the V1 nothing else will do. I also really like the hidden display. I hate when every car behind you can see your detector. I also means something to me that Mike Valentine drives a Porsche.

I've also heard great things about the Beltronics Prp rx65. It has the new Ku band otion and is essentially a passport now that they are owned by the same company. Anyone out there have one?

No doubt built-in detectors are the best ---
However, if you're gonna buy one to add to your 997/S, I heard that the new BEL RX65 is the way to go. Multiple unbiased reviews have been published this year on this model and it appears to be stellar, edging out both passport and V1. If you need a price break, the new BEL vector 995 is the same as the RX65 without the autoscan feature for Ka.
You owe it to yourself to test these out if possible --- trial them from your friends if you can.

I hard-wired my Passport 8500 in about 20 minutes (with the help of a friend). It was pretty simple and has saved me numerous times. But I did just get a ticket last week...doing 80 in a 55. Anyway, my vote is for the 8500 or the V1. Good luck.
