The road trip is complete, 69hrs 42min, 4679.2 mi. Av speed 68. Av Mpg 23.8.
Yesterday I covered 665 mi between Wichita, KS and Grants, NM, taking
US-54 from Wichita to Tucumcari, NM. 54 runs SW passing thru KS, OK, TX ending in NM and is a great two lane road that you ccan drive at a pretty good clip...every 50 or so miles you have to pass thru a town where you slow down to 30 mph. When 54 hits NM it is one of the finest roads I've driven on, whats so special is that it is marble smooth for it's duration and triple digits are pleasure. The down side to the day was the March WINDS and they were brutal blowing across the road...crosswind driving really sucks and and GUSTS are NOT fun at speeds of 90+, you just can't relax.
A short video of why I like it: Driving US-54
Today I covered 732 miles on the final leg of the journey...still had crosswinds..and a BIG PUCKER incident..
Driving along I-40 and about 150 yards ahead of me was a POS pickup..all of a sudden a wheel and tire flys up and out of the bed of the truck and proceeds to bounce about on the roadway, I'am wondering which way it's going to bounce as it takes one in front of me about 50 yards...needless to say there was no contact and the wheel and tire ended up in the median..but there were a couple of moments.
A great trip in a great car, in fact I'am doing another in late Sept, PDE again...we live in a most beautiful country, that can only be appreciated on the road.
Do youself a favor, do a road trip sometime.
A couple of dirty end of trip pictures.

Great stuff MJones!
What an awesome trip and great updates! Those pictures say it all.
I absolutely agree with you, this is an amazing country and is best enjoyed on a road trip.
One of the most memorable trips I did in my early 20's was driving from Mexico City to Toronto, and back. An experience I will never forget.

Mjones - I'm just about ready to sign up for the Masters program - might join you for the road trip out there too! Tell me which date you are signed up for...I'm in Dana Point so we could convoy.

I've made several x-country trips in the last almost 50 years but last years trip was the most rewarding and difficult. I had the honor and priviledge to be a member of the 2004 Tour of Hope team crossing the country by bicycle and spreading the message of support for cancer research and clinical trials.
