Thumbs up GSM Siim Card Attn: alin2

I was at a friends house and tried their 64k Cingular Sim card that they just got two weeks ago, and presto the phone worked and the phone book poped up.
At least in my phone both 32k and 64k Sim cards work equally well.

My 997 has the sos and telephone buttons...if that means anything. Now, can I put in a sim card (where?) and get the phone to work? Can it be that simple? I thought it was an option that in effect just turned the system on for personal use. In other words, my car is wired for a phone, but not activitated....?

Below the keypad and above the repeat button there is a tiny drawer where your Sim card is placed.

To make it work you will need:
p/n 997.044.900.71 Set, telephone module, that includes Phone module, Microphone, Antenna and associated parts, the install time is approx 4.5hrs.

Yep, that and about $1000.00 and the day at your dealer will do it!

Hmmm. My 64K card definitely didn't work. I wonder if there is a new firmware that allows the GSM phone to work with the new ENS protocol on the 64K card? Also, does your Cingular network default to GSM850 where you live or GSM900 or the AT&T standard of GSM1900? Here in Chi-town, it's GSM850, and the triband GSM module on PCM can't use that frequency.

Okay, I'm confused, but I think it's got something to do with the ENS protocol. Perhaps, the Cingular SIMs in So-Cal don't use ENS???

Umm. Sorry. As I understand it, if your PCM does not have the "SOS" button and the GSM card drawer, there will not be an "easy" retrofit of the GSM phone module. You may need to get a new PCM. But, MJones seems to know a LOT more about this than I do...MJones, any comments?

Early 997 models may require upgrading both the faceplate and the PCM unit.
If you really want the GSM phone I'd write a nice letter to PCNA to see if they might help you out with a new PCM unit

Default Sim Card Version

Hmm.

I've tried a 64k Cingular card in our 997, and it wasn't recognized. A 32k from a now-defunct AT&T account is at least recognized, and the phone book pulls up, but with no service on that card, no phone!

MJones: Do you know the build date of your car? I wonder if there is some kind of update available to make the PCM recognize the 64k card...

Hmm.

Thanks,

-Jim
