Mke, yes I do think that is appropriate, and I stated such in my initial post. I was just having a little fun about the age of the thread. It is unfortunate that my attempt at injecting a little humor here was misunderstood.

UPDATE
**** SLIDES OUT EASILY IF YOU TURN THE KNURLED PLASTIC NUT UNDER THE BOOT CLOCKWISE LOOKING DOWN with a channel lock pliers, CIRCILED IN BLUE IN PIX BELOW. (Im using VB997 & Topspd pictures)
It just a quarter turn and it releases the ****.

Stumbled across this thread. In the very first two pics, there is a warning in red letters "Do not separate boot from ****!" In my Targa, which my father now owns, the dealer separated the boot from the **** when they repaired a broken shift cable. I've never been able to re-attach it. Is there any way to do so, or do we just have to live with it?
It's obviously not a major issue, it just looks a bit odd.

With this:
Does that plastic bit in blue require a lot of torque to undo? My concern is I don't want to scratch it up. Thanks.

No, not at all. It's an easy 1/4 turn clockwise; however, the hardest part is removing the **** afterward. Requires a significant amount of force to pull it off the shifter.

Do I have it right? Thanks.

Hehehe....I wish. Perhaps some cars, the **** can just be lifted off w/o straining a muscle, but many members out there had to use some force to get it off; me included. The point of turning the **** is to allow it to be pulled off the shifter. If you did not twist the ****, you will not be able to lift it off the shifter, as it's a locking mechanism for the mating of the **** to the shifter.

Still confused here... "turning the ****" and "turn the knurled plastic nut" are two different things, no?The instructions also say "What you are trying to accomplish is to get to the sides and "loosen" the grip that the **** has on the shifter leaver itself then pull the **** straight off. No screws like on the 996. It's just pure tension holding the **** onto the leaver."
Which tells me you don't turn the actual ****. You just pull straight up.
Thanks.

Right. You don't turn the actual shifter ****, but rather the "plastic nut" at the base of the shifter. "The Blue Circle" in the pix above. You then need to lift that shifter **** away from the shaft.
