Picture 1: The pieces of the disassembled boot & ****.
Picture 2: Feed the part on the right up into the inside of the boot and fold the edge of the boot into the part. Fold in about 3-5 mm.
Picture 3: Insert the small ring into the open so it holds in the boot material that you've folded into the opening.
Picture 4: Feed the bottom of the **** into the hole and engage it into the piece you fed into the bottom of the boot.
It takes a little patience and some trial and error to get the parts aligned properly so when the **** is in the locked position it aligns with the stitching on the boot as in Picture 5.
Any way to get the boot off without taking the shifter **** off? I just want to replace the boot only to match my wheel, brake lever and console lid.
No.
Go to post #46 (above) and look at the pics, but start with the last pic and scroll up. That is the process you will need to follow to remove the boot from the shifter ****, after you have removed the **** and boot from the shifter shaft.
There is one inaccuracy to these removal instructions....
In pic #4 of the original post, you don't have to cut the rubber. You just need to remove both sides of the shifter handle "cowling". Both pieces come off after you remove the two screws. The cowling pinches the rubber over the indents in the shaft. Remove the cowling and the pressure is removed... just pull up. No need to cut or push the screwdriver in.
Whats so weird is that i went to do this on my 987 Cayman S today and the process is completely different than this. Just about every step works differently. I assumed they had similar procedures since I THOUGHT they shared the same parts, but it must not be the case.
Even as simple as step 2, removing the screws, they are Torx8, and not philips, and then you need to turn a plastic holding clip on the bottom between the **** and the boot 1/2 turn counter clockwise, and the entire thing just slides right off easy peasy.
Planning on doing an DIY now that I can swap out the ****/boot in less than 90 seconds.
I can't even remove the boot. How do you get enough grip to pull it up and out?
If I understand the picture you pull up the front (the part towards the front of the car) and then unhook the back.
I'm afraid to break something or damage the painted base.
You pry it up. Slip a trim removal tool between the leather and trim piece. A screwdriver will work but you will damage the trim bezel. Any non-metal tool or thingy will work.

The paint on the silver piece on the front (facing the dash) of the shift **** is peeling, can I just take off the shift pattern cap, unscrew the 2 philips screws and just take that piece off the shift **** to repaint?
pic for what I'm talking about
does this piece release even if I kept the boot and **** in place?
