Shifter ****/Boot Removal

This is how to remove the shifter **** and boot on the 997...It should save you the frustration it caused me to figure it out...

First Step in Removal

The bottom of the boot is removed from the silver trim surround. The trim surround stays in place. Is this correct?
The removal of the two Philips head screws allow removal of the front piece below the ****. Is this correct?
What is the purpose of the "rubber" on either side of the top of the lever?
Is there any trick to getting it back in the proper place when re-assembling the lever/****?

1. Yes, the silver trim stays in place. The best thing to do is grab the boot at the back and pull straight up. Then roll it forward and unhook the front from under the console. The male retainers are straight in the back and curved in the front. Check the first picture, I showed the underside so you can view the type of clips you’re dealing with.
2. Yes, the silver trim on the **** really doesn’t need to be removed but I found it helped my grip and you'll avoid scratching it...Up to you.
3. On the issue about the rubber at the top...It's a pain in the ***. You need to get under the rubber from the top as neat as possible. What you are trying to accomplish is to get to the sides and "loosen" the grip that the **** has on the shifter leaver itself then pull the **** straight off. No screws like on the 996. It's just pure tension holding the **** onto the leaver.
Are you doing a shift kit or just changing the ****?

Even though I don't plan on removing my shift **** any time soon...thanks for the nice post/pics...it is nice to know how to do stuff like this in case a need arises someday.

This site needs more DIY step by step with pics like your post. Great job!
While the procedure looks simple enough, it also seems like it could be easy to scratch some interior trim pieces if one is not super careful.
