Default Engine fan shuts off with key

Like title says - I've read a bunch of threads where people's fans stay on "too long" or they're concerned that the fan keeps running when the car is off (normal operation), however, mine does not ever stay on when I shut off the car. What could be wrong here? My temps all seem normal during all driving conditions - hot when I'd expect (though never too hot, cooling system is doing its job), and cool when the car is cool.

Mine does the same.
I've read that if the engine compartment is especially hot, the fan will stay on.

Based on temp it will stay on or not. It can also turn itself back on and even raise the decklid even if the car is off and locked. Could do that on a really hot day where the pavement was hit and heat from it radiates up into the engine bay.

In six years of 997 ownership mine has never stayed on or come on after startup. Weird, huh?

Based on temp it should stay on, but what I'm seeing is that it never does. I can have oil temps at 225 when I shut off the engine and the fan immediately cuts off. If I put the key in, in auxiliary mode, the fan will come back on but only while the key is switched to on. I think there might be a problem with this but maybe not?

@carguy999 Do you have a Durametric? If so, command it to ON to be sure the control circuit is ok. If it's controllable then the next weakest link is the temperature sensor.

I do not, but I have been looking for a reason to buy something like that I'll do a little bit of research and figure that out. From what I've read there are tools that can read codes, some can clear codes, and I guess some can send commands? Is that pretty safe to do something like tell a fan to turn on?

IF I turn my key off, the fan will ALWAYS initially turn off with the car but the car must reassess after a few minutes and decide to turn it back on because I will hear it come on from inside my house with the car locked in the garage.

Do you happen to live in Western WA state - we could get together somewhere and we'd hook up mine. If you're a member of the PCA, some of your region's members might help you out. While hooked up, you could also capture other values - cam deviations, etc.

Turning on the engine compartment fan would be safe.

Thanks for the offer jchapura! I'm in Wisconsin but am a member of PCA so I'll put some feelers out.
