Default Second Gear

Hello everyone. I own a manual 2010 carrera S. It is Great to drive. I love it in fact. Beaten to death question. When my gear oil is cold switching from first to second gear is notchy and I sometimes feel on the stick something spinning ( gear). Once warmed up it is a pleasure with no issues with second gear. I just had the fluid flushed and changed. Still does it when cold. It has 20000 miles on it. I would like to know if anyone fixed this problem and how. Maybe a mechanic on this thread can give some insight. Thanks,
Rob

Have the same issue with my 2005 C2S (55k miles).
Also did an oil change but without any positive impact. Think it either needs a real cleaning/flush, or some sort of maintenance/rebuilt.

Which oil was used? (Hopefully, 75w90 MobilLube PTX.)
It might also be the shifter cables/cable ends.
It might also be the motor mounts. Have you assessed if they've become excessively worn out (Firstly, review the exhaust tip stance in their bumper cover "cut-out")?

Have you tried aligning the shifter/cables? 2nd gear was a bit notchy after installing the GT3 shifter bushings. After alignment, its perfect.

Shifter Alignment tool: 000 721 961 91 (Pictured In Green) Around $30

Simply pop out cables, install alignment tool and reinsert shifter cables. (About an 1hr of work if you are dragging your feet)

Do Porsche A mechanics ever come on to give their opinions as they are obviously the most experienced.

I have the same issue on my ‘09 C2S — I’ve noticed that if I leave the clutch depressed for a second or two longer than normal *before trying to shift into 2nd*, I can easily shift into 2.

As OP noted, once the car is warmed up, the issue goes away.

2009 C2S 192K miles

Changing the transmission oil for what Porsche recommends can sometimes help. Mobilube PTX is the stuff you need... hard to find but Suncoast Porsche sells it among others. Read more here: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...-gear-oil.html

IMO, adjusting that gear lever will not work, but that is my opinion. That adjustment just adjusts how straight up the shifter is... all the mechanics, clicking, springiness, etc, is actually all inside the transmission and the cable ends are pinned to the transmission back there. Some say it works, but for the life of me, I can't understand how. The shifter is just a floppy lever that pushes and pulls the cables (actually, they are flexible rods, not cables).

Peace

At 20K miles it should not be an oil or a wear issue, why I suggested shifter alignment. Its also an inexpensive start.

A correctly aligned shifter gives you the correct range of motion to manipulate the transmission input linkages.

Motor mounts in regards to the age (not mileage) is also a possibility.

Make sure the correct Gear oil was used.

Listen to Bruce in Philly. He is correct. PTX solved he issue on my 2011 C2S and my previous 2008 C2S.

I used the "PORSCHE" labeled gear oil from FCP with a positive result at 44k on my 09 C4S. Also impactful was shifting at higher revs. At what revs are you shifting?

1st and 2nd gear handle synchros made of different material than the rest of the gears because they get used so often. Happens with all of them when cold. Just be deliberate, but gentle when cold.

+1. This has been happening with 911s for decades. People usually complain about having a hard time grabbing 1st gear while rolling when cold. Winter is worse.

Default Mobilube PTX

Has anyone had success with mobilube PTX for their second gear issues? I’m going to mention it to my mechanic. Thanks,
Robert
