997.2 approved tires - and Porsche USAs odd stance
So it was time to put new tires on the 997.2, and low and behold, the Micheline PS2s the N4 rated tires, are out of stock for the rears.. backorder. .who knows how long; I need tires now. The Conti's are in but not N rated.
So I go to Porsche to check the tire list, and of course the 997.2 isn't on the list (too new to be on the legacy list, not helpful).
So I contact Porsche for advice if the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 were approved, and get this sort of response, which really has me puzzled:
Why can Porsche corporate not answer this basic question? Its their responsibility to set the standard, not the individual dealerships. What am I missing?

Thank you for contacting Porsche Cars North America in regard to the approval of tires on your 997.2.
We understand you are in need of new tires, however the approval list does not include your model. I can certainly understand you having questions to see which tire would be the best to use for your 911 Targa 4. We offer our sincerest apologies to learn of your experience while attempting to order new tires.
With the tire approval list topping at the 996, we ask for your understanding that we must refer you to contact an authorized Porsche Center to obtain the expertise of our factory trained technician. When speaking with our technicians, they will be able to address this inquiry as well as provide the best insight on other approved tire options, as they are considered to be experts on all things Porsche.
Please click here to access our Porsche Center locator, which will pull up your nearest 10 authorized Porsche Centers after entering your desired zip code. We appreciate you opening up on your experience, allowing us the opportunity to document your feedback and make updates where fit.

Sounds like some version of ChatGPT generated that or outsourced. Between 'we understand you are in need of new tires' and 'apologies to learn of your experience', I would have stopped reading.
Do you really need/want Porsche spec tires?

What's wrong with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Pilot Super Sport? Not N-rated but in wide use in the 997 community for a very long time.

"Ask your local dealer" seems like a pretty reasonable response - if worded quite oddly - and the fastest way to get info about what people are doing locally and recently. You don't call the CEO for a tech support problem! I had no idea N rated tires was a thing until I needed some new shoes. Ended up with PS4S and they have been great for my needs, never looked back, won't even think about it next time.

I never cared about the N rating.... however, I favor the PS2 as being far superior than the 4Ss... they have a stiffer sidewall and track better... the 4Ss are mushy and, frankly, tick me off given we own an expensive sports car. I owned two sets of 4Ss and many PS2s. Regarding performance? I think they are the same as well as some YouTube reviews. The PS2s are N rated and the 4Ss are not but again, I don't care about this stuff.
Peace

I am in SoCal, so 90% of the time I could be on PSC2s but when I am up in NorCal, I like the wet performance and "snow performance" of the PS4S. I put snow performance in quotes because I do not ever see much more than a light dusting at the elevation I go up to commonly.
I also run a tighter suspension set up over stock which might make it so I like the extra gush of the PS4S. I need to go reflect on that. I defer to @Petza914 for that one as the elder wise man...but I am on OEM GT3 suspension. Nevertheless, I have driven on PS2 and PS4S. I prefer the PS4S. I have also been on Pilot Sport Cups and prefer PSC2s over those as well BUT (full disclosure) the PSCs I drove on were a couple years past their wear date but on full tread whereas the PSC2s were fresh.
Last, if I was in your situation, in relation to the PS2s, consider PZeros as well. They always served me well.
oh, P.S. The PS4S are GREAT off road IMO. Mainly dirt and gravel or flat trails with little to no rocks or ruts.

Have you tried the PSC2s? Just curious. I think that I would try them but (to the OP), I use PS4S for an all-season tire, lol.

I have had only good experiences with NITTO as well but mainly their NT05 and NT01s. All around solid tires. Before I started having to drive up north to my mom's a few times a year, I daily drove NT01s for a couple years. Super fun drives home for sure!! ...but also great tires to drive to the track, drive on the track, and drive home. Slightly irrelevant except that Nittos in general have always served me well.

I think there are plenty of good tires out there and to pay 30-70% more for maybe 5% higher performance that 2% of 997 drivers will hardly ever if ever use is kind of silly to me. My Invos tame 475 HP RWD only just fine, cornering grip is high enough where I actually don't want to go any faster, and the ride is great so what more do I need?
