Grinding and Notchy when Shifting into Second Gear
Hello folks. I know this has been beaten to death. Here I go anyway. I recently bought a 2010 Carrera S. I love the power. When I first start up when cold and shifting into second gear it grinds and then after that it’s notchy until warmed up. Once warmed up car runs smoothly. No issues whatsoever. I’m worried that this is a synchro problem. But again it only happens when engine sat overnight. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Rob BTW car has 19000 miles.

I have similar issues, check out my thread as well. Will update there when I've replace tranny fluid with Mobil PTX. My dealer jumped right to replace, but we'll see.

I have the same thing. I have a 2010 C2 as well. I have replaced the transmission fluid with the one that everyone recommends. It was a Mobil product but can't remember the exact name. I have upgraded my shifter to the GT3 shifter and nothing has really changed. I think it is just a Porsche thing. I am coming from a Miata and there is no comparison. It has to be one of the best shifters next to the S2000. You are right though, it goes away when it gets warm. Try double clutching until it gets warm. That works for me.

Fluid change for sure. I have used Redline in everything EXCEPT for my 997.2. Use the Mobil PTX / Porsche fluid. This is well documented.
A 19,000 mile car does not have "bad" synchronizers. If you are getting grinding then YOU are trying to beat the synchro of which there are three of them trying to stop you until the gear speeds match. These are not 356's or even early 911's. These are 6 speed Toyota based gearboxes that will handle tons of torque and they have their own feel while shifting. Also the short shift leverage (even on pure stock OEM) minimizes leverage. Since you "recently" got into this game, just relax and learn the new shifting art. We have all gone thru this. 60+ years of driving stick shifts still does not qualify you to me a master 997 shifter. After the PTX fluid change and practice, practice practice you will be with the rest of us with smooth shifting gears. Not quick and balky when cold, but very smooth and easy when warmed up,(you and the car).
Change the fluid, check the cable ends although .2 cars have no cable issues and be patient and practice. Like getting a new guitar, still needs player break in process.

FYI according to Carfax, the Manual Transmission in my 2006 C4 was replaced at about 25K miles. It now has 107K.
I'm assuming occasionally early on the MT has some issues with syncros. Don;t hear about it often.

same story on my 2006 C4. Was replaced early on in its life as it got stuck in gear

To RZau; Change the fluid and with a bit of time it will play like a vintage Martin. I love mine.

Speaking of Transmission issues, I saw another PDK owner on sidewalk outside my Indy's shop being attended to after getting the bad news.

Change Fluid
Hi guys. I’m having the gearbox fluid changed. We will see. If the grinding still happens then it a king the plunge to fix the synchros that need fixing. It shouldn’t be doing this with only 19000 miles. A female owned the car before me in Florida. Maybe just used first and second gear a lot. Will keep you posted.

I feel bad that you need to continuously be so defensive. It's true that the PDK has yet to suffer a mechanical failure. And the rare distance sensor failure now has multiple options for repairs that are far less expensive than those reported for MTs (barely more than a clutch job). But really, we should focus on how lucky we are as a group to have the chance to drive these wonderful cars with the great array of options, even if you are in a sub group that has as much exposure to risk as the manual transmission creates!!!!!

Mine does the same thing. If I hesitate briefly in neutral it slides right into second. I brought it to a dealer soon after I bought it
and they they said it's perfectly normal. A friend who has raced and built a few Porsche transmissions suggested that there are
two gears on the same shaft and that may cause a slight synchro issue, or something to that effect. He also thought it was normal.
The mentioned dealer gave me a free intro. trans oil change and it didn't make a difference. I would stick with the Porsche spec.
Mobil PTX because it is designed for the Porsche synchros.
