Default 997 isn’t the Goldilocks I thought it would be

This is somewhat hard to explain but I’ve found I do not love my 997 as much as I thought I would After the honeymoon period ended I rarely drive it. I still absolutely love looking at it though.

I bought it on a bit of a whim but I’d been a Porsche fan since I was a teenager. I did some research once I saw the car and thought the 997 would give me some of the rawness of an earlier car with enough creature comforts and reliability to drive it 3-4x per week.

Now I feel like I would be better off with an older model that is more of a beater and has more
projects. I’ve found I like the projects more than the car itself. On the other hand some days I find myself looking at newer 911s.

Considering selling it but can’t pull the trigger on that either. I find a certain comfort seeing it
parked in garage.

no real question - just an observation

I beg to differ - but a base 997.1 may be the softest of the bunch in terms of getting that fizzy feeling - but still a great car that could benefit from being sharpened up a bit.

It can, and does everything - 6 years and 40k miles later:

sport utility / hauler / everything / car

I have owned older Porsches and now newer Porsches. I don't miss the old ones. I have enough car projects. They are called Ferraris.

I understand he sentiment. One thing you might do with the 997 before moving out from it is take it to a weekend DE through your local Porsche Club. These cars are absolutely magical on the track, and no old 911 can match that feeling, IMHO. You might change your mind about it.

I just got back from a DE and was absolutely amazed at the performance of my car. That was a great suggestion!

Do some mods to it. Will make it more yours, give you some projects to do, and customize it more toward your liking. My 997 is my favorite of my 7 and the one I'd never sell.

We had a 997 Turbo, which I loved! But I always felt like if I hit the gas I was going to lose my license lol. We ended up selling it last year and just picked up a 930 Turbo (which we haven't even driven yet). My thoughts on getting something older (aircooled) is that it was never going to be a DD or driven to work or anything like that. So as a weekend car or C&C or whatever we end up bringing it to it, it doesn't need to be that practical or comfortable because it's limited use. Just do it! You can always buy another 997 if it doesn't work out.

What did you buy? Maybe you just bought the wrong model of 997.

Wrong model would be a tiptronic and from the post history it appears that he has a 2006 C4 manual. TBH, I was kinda the same way .... like during the first month this is the greatest thing since sliced bread and then meh ... what's so special about this and then it gradually crept up to hey i really like this car. Part of that for me at least was customizing it to my liking and getting rid of the crap seats and making it sound like a real car. But yeh, I wasn't instantly and continuously enamored without wavering at all. Part of that is also what you get into it from. I had the Cayman and an M Coupe so the 911 just didn't feel super special but again it has definitely grown on me over the years and now can't think to ever get rid of it.

Unless you drive these cars on twisty roads (or a track for that matter) IMO it’s only a matter of time before you get bored with the experience.

OP, what kind of roads do you drive on?

Gotta say it's been quite the opposite for me. I really liked my BMW 540...hell, I put 286,000 miles on it before buying my 997. Now hopping in the BMW after driving the Porsche for a few days is a huge letdown. I'm pleasantly surprised at how practical the 997 is. This was a big concern for me before buying....will I fit comfortably inside it? (I'm 6'1") Will I be able to fit my golf clubs in it? Will it be a pain to drive in day to day traffic? Will it be a mechanical nightmare? But I'm officially in love with it. Checks all the boxes and puts a smile on my face every time I hop in it...which is 4-5 days a week.

I didn't care for my frist 997 either, it was a 2005 S and I felt like the s2000 (I had 2 prior), were more enjoyable to drive and felt more like "drivers cars". but my second one made me fall in love with it, it was a 2007 S, but the difference is it had the sport shifter and it made the driving experience 10x better.

Now I have a 997.2 PDK, so far I love the PDK and I see this one as a long term car (although I do have an Emira deposit but hoping to keep both when the time comes)

I don't know if you're single or married. I bought my 997.1 ( not daily driver) 6 speed, coupe because I needed a little more comfort so my wife would like taking rides to local wineries! My previous play toy ( not daily driver ) was a "73 BMW 2002Tii. She would never ride in it. It was to raw. Porsche guys wanted me to get an air cooled 911 but you know the rest of the story.....Like PETE I love the 997.1....

My 997 is pretty much a weekend car to run to dinner/shows and a car to attack twisty roads around me.

I could see not liking the car if it’s flat and where there is a lack of twisty roads, also being a tip would zap any fun for me.

This car comes alive on backroads and on the track, the rear engine characteristics are fun.

Photographer on most of these is @limecreekroad
