Default LS3 motor in 997.1?

I have a 2005 Carrera S and the crank shaft bearing went at 62K miles. Porsche won't do anything about this, of course, even though there's a known defect with this engine.

It will cost over $30K to get a new motor installed.

Looking at alternate options here - has anyone put a different engine in a 997? Renegade Hybrids sells a kit to help with the swap and everything can probably be done for around $20K.

Does anyone have any personal experience with something like this?

Thx.

People have done that and it's an abomination. Beyond the installation problems it's a very different engine; different character. Great engine on a Corvette not on a 911. IMO.

Buy a used engine instead. It's risky, but you can get it borescoped.

I've been in a Renegade swapped Boxster on the track and it was great fun - very fast, different noise, different power, same great chassis. No affiliation.

2009 C2S 186k miles

Tyler Hoover of Hoovies Garage did a swap... a disaster. Check him out on YouTube. Kit wasn't.

Nonsense, 62,000 miles out of the original engine is an abomination. Address the oil pan issues with the ls, and there isn’t any downside.

LS motors in 911 make for a great sports car. Check out Chavis Engineering. Thier work makes the swap factory quality.

Guy did a very well done build on here a couple years ago with custom machined adapter rings for transmissions, etc. Not sure if it's the same one being referenced here, butninwas impressed. Something to be said for an alternative that out performs the original powertrain for 1/2 the cost and probably easier serviceability.

As mentioned, car will have a totally different character, but I don't hate the idea of a muscle car 911. If our 944 S2 ever needs a motor, I'd for sure consider it in that as that car is light on power to begin with, but that's one of the things that made it a perfect 1st car for my son.

Look up Chavis performance, he does LS conversions, and sells kits including plug and play harnesses that retain the oem computer and functionality.

Sorry to hear about your car. I have researched the LS swap extensively and say go for it. Agree with others that Chavis is the way to go That’s my backup plan should my 3.6 ever grenade itself. More power, more torque, great sound (albeit different), only a few more pounds of weight and a slightly higher CoG. The only abomination here is what a Porsche replacement/rebuild costs.

Thanks. The issue I see is that I have a Tiptronic and they apparently don't do those conversions. I would need to switch the gearbox, etc. to make it a manual. That's an extra $5K.

I'm quickly going from being a huge advocate of this brand to an anti-influencer. I hate that.

Used M97 engines are pretty rare as most have this same problem! These were defective engines, and Porsche knows it.

I would feel horrible if I were to replace the engine just to sell the car and then someone had this same issue. That's not what I'm all about.

I would rather sell the car as-is and let someone do something good with the car.

My friend did this on his 996. It was an amazing machine when he finished. VERY well done and ridiculously fast. He sold it, then built a DeLorean with a Kia Stinger motor. lol He's nuts.

Lots of good information out there if the OP wants to go this route.
