Default Tires

It's that time for me and I need to start looking before I take mine out of storage and get ready for the upcoming driving season. Yes, I know the tire to beat is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S even though it has some detractors. I'm looking for some suggestions for some less expensive options. I currently have P-zeros on the car and those are just as expensive as the Michelins. I don't put as many miles on my cars as some and just do spirited driving so no track miles. I am looking for a high performance but less expensive tire because they will likely age out long before they wear out. If I knew I would put tons of miles on them, I would just get the Michelins.

Looking for experiences and suggestions for all.

PS, I have a Cab so lower noise would be better as well.

Thanks, P-Dawg

Just put on the Continental Contact Extreme Sport 02 and pretty happy with the experience. Cheaper than the MP4S but still a very capable max summer tire.

I run Nitto Invo on my 997, 2 928s, and a 944. Have been through multiple sets. Great dry grip, fine in the rain, cool tread pattern, and nice ride. Have a set in the garage to fit on my 914 too.

I am trying the Continental Contact Extreme Sport 02. They seem slightly better then the Micheline's in the wet, however not quiet as good in the dry. In reality this is splitting hairs, on the street, they seem to be almost identical unless you are pushing really hard.

How is the ride quality?

That tire is avail in 235/40-18 and 295/35-18, which is a hard to find size in Summer 300TW+ rating.

Yokohama ADVAN Apex V601

Put these on my 991 before trading it in on the second 997. They are a great inexpensive tire. $1060 for the set.

Ride quality is good. Coming from the Hankook Ventus, tires feel more firm (seems like a better contact patch) but not harsh. Road noise is present but not overwhelming.

I commute 35 miles each way to work and ate through my Pilot Sport 4S pretty quickly (a few track days also contributed to that). I switched to the GMAX RS just to see how a cheaper tire holds up. So far i am happy. A lot less road noise and the performance is good but I have not really pushed them yet. I have a track day in March at Sonoma Raceway so we will see how they feel vs the Michelins.
I see amazon has 305/30/19 for $262. GO big or go home!!

The MPS5S is allegedly coming. It was scheduled to launch in November 2022, but it was delayed. No explanation as to why it was delayed nor when the new ETA is.

‘Dawg,
you are free to experiment, but the verdict is in. MPS4S.
”Detractors” are gonna detract.
Mine are superior to the excellent MPSS and Bridgestone RE-050 that preceded them.
Pretty much in every way.
Performance wet and dry, noise, ride and (so far) wear.
YMMV, but saving a few hundred bucks on a set that might equal the standard, but likely not exceed…is false economy on your $100K GTS.
4-5 years of use is a bargain for $2K.

Let us know what you get and how they perform after the thaw takes place in Cheesehead Land.

I had a set of General G Max RS's installed on my '11 C2S, in July 2021.
I don't track my car and heard a lot a positive things about the G-Max tires. The fact that
General is owned by Continental, didn't hurt . To date, they've been a great tire for me.

I've run Michelin Pilot Sports and Bridgestone RE50's and the G Max doesn't feel like a step down. I haven't driven the car on too many cool days, but they seem to perform well in 40 deg f temps,. They're quiet on the highway and provide plenty of grip, so I'm happy.

Well......I can't argue with your logic!

If you don't need anything but summer + there are also Cup2s and Cup2R, or the equivalent Dunlop, Pirellis, or Advans that push the summer tire as far as is DOT legal. I am pretty stuck on PS4S because they work great as all season tires for my purposes which includes varied terrain and inclement weather but I have yet to drive in snow on them.

After 5 years with my first set, I just put on fresh PS4S!!
