Default Engine # and IMS on 2006 c4 cab

Hi
thinking about buying an 06 c4 cab. Wondering if the ims could be an issue and where I can find the engine number? I got under the rear left and couldn’t find anything that resembled an engine #.

Thanks!

It looks like this when you find it.

I have a 05 C2S. IMS not done yet. 61k miles and I drive it like it wants to be driven.

Maybe a look from farther back will help. Here’s my C2 cab.

It might be covered in dirt and grime but there is a little tab on the left side of the sump where it’s printed as shown in the photos above. Just get on your hands and knees behind the left rear wheel and look to your right. It’s not that hard to find.

In any case I believe all 2006 models had the larger more reliable IMS bearing so it shouldn’t be a huge concern.

99.9 % of all 997 mfg'd in 2006 all had the larger bearing .... I would be more concerned with bore scoring ...if it does not have it buy it !! .... You are good to go !!

Thanks!

It’s a local deal. 06 c4 cab, manual, nice color, around 40k miles. Clean car fax.

Body looks to be in good shape. Minor paint chips and scratches

interior looks good other than some buttons that are rubbed

this owner had changed oil on regular service time.

Tires were changed at 30k

brakes, not sure

top is in good shape

haven’t gotten a private inspection yet

Hard to know how much to pay for these

IMS issue or IMSB issue?
Assuming the former is the sprocket slipping on the shaft, I don't think there is a model year or engine cut off.
Assuming the latter, 06 should be the later bearing.

You need to check the date code on the tires because they may be old and get a bore scope inspection and DME report.

Search Google with “rennlist 997”, all of this has been covered.

#1 - Cross check the engine# because there are many 2005 build dates sold as 2006 models - The larger IMS Bearing is less prone to issues.
For 3.6L "Non-S" motors----> if the engine# is M96/05 69507476 and higher it has the larger more robust IMS bearing.
Also if you shop for a 997 with the 3.8L "S" motor ---->Engine#' is from M97/01 68509791 and higher it has the larger revised more robust IMS Bearing.

#2 - Get full PPI at good Porsche Specialist shop. Make sure they check DME computer for Over Rev Report & Cam Deviation Report.
#3 -
Get Bore Scope Inspection to check cylinder walls on all 6 cylinders. They should provide you with 3 photos of each cylinder. **The 3.8L "S" motor is more prone to Bore Scoring.

*The HVAC Fan & Temp buttons get warn and is common - They are available and easy to replace.
*Coolant tank cracks/leak is common issue and should have been replaced

**I owned a 2006 C4 2 years ago - Great car. It had the 3.6L motor and Bore Scope Inspection was very good as was the Bore Scope inspection on my current 2006 3.6L C4 Coupe.

**Another nice optional feature for the Cabriolet is the wind deflector which provides nice comfy/quieter ride with top down at 70-80mph. If you go forward with purchase I suggest the wind deflector if it doesn't have one.
