Default Battery suddenly dead on my 997.1

I went out this morning to start the car and give it a little exercise and the battery was stone dead. It's been 3 days since I started it last. So dead that the key won't come out and I can't open the frunk or engine.

A) there must be a hood release somewhere?

B) What could cause the battery to die so quickly, Key was removed, stereo and lights turned off. Any clues before I throw another battery in?

To release the hood you can connect thru the battery terminals in your fuse box footwell kick panel (procedure in your owners manual)

Forget about wondering why the battery died .... pull the battery out and get it load tested to confirm if the battery is good or bad ..if confirmed as bad replace it and you are done.

If it's not your battery you will need to start to evaluate where the issue may lie ... Not a big deal

That happened to me when I left my V1 plugged in. My battery was also six years old and needed to be replaced. Here's how to pop your trunk with a dead battery.

How old is the battery? If you can't get the frunk open with the fuse box, there is a manual cable release in the front driver's side fender well.

If the battery is more than 4 years old, don't bother charging it even if it tests good. Replace it. I have never had a battery last longer than about 5 years in any car I have ever owned and that's a lot of cars!

Got the frunk open. I only bought the car a month ago so I don't know how old the battery is. Date tabs aren't punched, but there is a sticker under the negative terminal that says 11/21. Guessing that is the date? Doesn't bode well. It's only reading 5V and I just tossed my cheap charger 2 months ago. Lessen: don't throw anything out...ever.

Get a Ctek maintainer and see what happens.

CTek is the way to go! Even if it doesn't help this time, it will keep you from this happening again.

What does a CTek do that my Harley Davidson 5 amp trickle charger won’t do?

I’m gonna need all the experience I can get! I think I just bought an 83 911 SC

Trickle chargers cook the batteries. You need a maintainer that monitors the charge and does not overcook the battery.

To initially charge the dead battery your 5A charger may do it. Just do not maintain the battery with it. And while charging make sure the battery does not get too hot and the electrolyte boils.

This one does that. It’s about $125 item. They’re designed to be left on all winter.

If you trust it fine. Ctek is the all around proven standard.

Seems fairly new to drain but I've seen Interstate batteries fail within two years. Do you have anything else install that could cause a parasitic drain? Our cars go into a deep sleep after the car has sat for 7 days to conserve the battery.

Test out your VR as well.

So I had it on the little charger all day. Voltage got up to about 12.1. When I took the charger off it slipped to 11.95 after a few minutes. I have an appointment to have "new" wheels put on at 2 tomorrow, so I need to figure this out while I have time to buy a battery in the morning if necessary.

I reinstalled the battery and it was enough to start the car. With the car running I was getting 13.5V from the alternator. I took the car for a ride and the voltage fluctuated between 13.2 and 13.5V. When I got back I popped the frunk lid before turning off the car. After shutting it down the voltage went from 12.6 to 12.4 where it seemed to settle. I'll see where it is in the morning.

Since these cars don't come with a voltage gauge, the previous owner bought and passed on this little device. Pretty handy. I unplugged it tonight.

Based on the three 997's I've owned that's how batteries behave in these cars. Have had the same thing happen in all three cars except there was enough left to pop the frunk. Cranked strong one night, dead the next morning with everything turned off overnight. No warning of a battery going bad. Nothing.

Just me but with a battery more than 2 or approaching 3 years old I never screwed around with removing it, checking for its condition and trying to recharge it. Easier and probably not a whole lot more expensive to just get a new one at Wal Mart for just over $200 which is what I think I paid last time with the old battery core exchange.
