Things I would check:
- Are the radiators clear of road debris?
- Do you have radiator screens? Some of the designs are very restrictive and actually increase operating temperatures
- Is the bumper bottom behind the center radiator fully cut out. It can be cut quite a bit (see below)
- Do the operating temperatures go down as you turn the cabin heat on?
- Are you running both radiator fans? If you use the car mostly on the track, you can actually remove one radiator fan.

Some people are using Water Wetter with good results Red Line Synthetic Oil. WaterWetter® (redlineoil.com)

My openings in the bottom are waaaaaay smaller, that's a good idea enlarging them
I have Zunsport grilles, see picture

Good to hear I was not alone with the high temps

Yep. That’s me in front of you, dragging ***, slowing you down 😂

that AIM Solo toy you have looks really cool. Would you recommend that model for a track nanny?

I believe at 275 the oil starts to shear and I don't need a 3rd ride in the cab of a flatbed truck from Laguna back home

Yeah, I won't be going to B'Willow or T'Hill this year for exactly these reasons...

Im having my engine oil and PDK oil replaced and sent off to analyze soon. I’m running Amsoil in both. When I google “track oil temps”, I get all kinds of conflicting info. Some peeps say 275° is fine as long as it’s kept under 300° and is fresh high quality oil. I wonder if it’s possible to go up to a 50 weight oil in our cars? I know the Dry sump GT3 engines will accept 50 weight.
Not sure if 50 weight will protect better or worse, as flow rate would be different.

I would love to find somebody Who runs in the PCA spec 997 class and find out what their temperatures are like during a hot race

so far, this is the best info I can come with in regards to oil temps.

Have you considered removing the zunsport grills?

Going to a heavier weight should make the problem worst according to what I read that from a motul tech somewhere.

Chris, you've always run hotter oil temps than I was ever comfortable running. But is this abnormal even for you?

That's crazy talk.

If you are looking for a comparison to a 997 race car keep in mind that most of us have both radiator fans and shrouds removed. That's good for at least 30 deg F but not practical for the street. I rarely see above 235 F on the oil temp and we run very coarse screens that don't restrict airflow.

Hey, I deliberately posted a screenshot which could swing either way: You just having passed me or I ready to pass you :-)
The AIM Solo is great if you're an engineer who loves deciphering squiggly lines.
If I were in the market now I'd get a Garmin Catalyst.

thanks for the recommendation. I think I’ll get one of the Garmin’s soon

Almost all temp issues at the track or on the street have to do with airflow to the radiators. I would open these up.

Thanks for everyone's input. Let's summarize:
  • Oil temps > 275 is where mostly everyone seems to draw the line
  • I'll remove the screens and open up the lower cutout
  • I'll hold off on replacing the waterpump at this time
  • I need a GT3 (sigh)

- Open the lower cutout before you start removing the screens (make incremental changes)
- I race these cars and my shops have always recommended drawing the line at 260/265
- Turn on your cabin heat if your temperature rises too much

Yikes, I would call it a day too. Have looked into an oil cooler?

https://lnengineering.com/9a1-oversi...2-991-911.html

The last time I took my 997.1 to Chuckwalla, my oil temp gauge pushed passed the 250 mark, I'd do a cool down lap and drive around the pits to do a proper cool down. I would get about 2-3 good laps before the oil temp would rise. I was the B group and the only mod I have are Eibach springs.

It was unfortunate that I couldn't get full sessions but for my next HPDE I'm going to have a deep sump, 3rd radiator, aero bumper with proper venting, an oil cooler and a DSC controller. I feel like these should help.

Thanks. I will definitely add the larger oil cooler to the to-do list.
Doesn't look like a DIY though (at least for my technical skills)

There are folks in the 996 world that have wired up a switch to turn on the high speed fans at will. While the cup cars don’t even have fans, they are much faster cars that will be able to cool better (more airflow), the stock-ish 996/7s can benefit from high speed fans anytime the vehicle speed is under 40mph, such as slow turns and cool down laps.
