What is the least expensive way to have a key made & programmed?
Bought a 2006 911 Cabriolet at auction and it didn't include the key. I've called several dealers, most have quoted $600-900. Just wondering if there are more affordable ways to purchase the key and have it cut and programmed?

it has no keys at all? If that is the case I think you have to go to the dealer. When I bought my car the second key was not programed and it cost $199 at the dealer. I asked around and was told only dealers have the computer that is able to program.

Wow - Last I checked in may 2021 at Porsche Dealer in Washington State it was $500+tx - I think they are charging you higher amount for the actual key blank.
It's been a while since I investigated but I believe you can buy the key blank for less expensive price($150-$200) thru Porsche parts sellers and then just pay the dealership for the programming which I think is $300
Others will chime in.with perhaps more accurate info but I'd start checking parts websites like Suncoast parts/Pelican Partsetc

Auction house probably lost them
Hope it was a fantastic deal---> Little risky buying Porsche without your eyes on it running unless insurance/junkyard auction
Would be curious to hear the events of purchase?

There is a company in England that you send a photo and number of your key to and they cut the blank and ship it back----> you add the Fob purchased separately and have that programmed
I used this method with one of my 997's years ago for spare key
Not sure about no key at all

All the key blade does is open the door and provide leverage to rotate the ignition switch. The RFID pill is the real key, and I am sure that is solely available from Porsche, programmed to your VIN.

Not sure who can cut a key that doesn't exist besides the dealership.
I build a spare key (fob from Suncoast, blade from a picture of the key emailed to keysinthepost.com) and took it to the dealer for programming. Probably saved $150 to $200.
BUT I had a key. Without one, I think they dealer might be the best bet. Give them the car and have them make the whole thing. Worth the extra $$ if you ask me.
Anyway, good luck—and maybe save the DIY approach for creating your spare key!

Hmm, how do you "give them the car" if you don't have a key to start it?

I know from non-Porsche experience it’s a much different situation if you’re trying to get a second key programmed versus not having any keys at all and trying to get one. Much more expensive for the latter.
