I took my 997.2 to Porsche Dealer for their assessment of a cabriolet top issue. They told me that for $250, they would analyze the issue, that money would go towards any work I allowed them to do.
Well….they kept it overnight and next day produced a list of about $10,000 in “recommended” work. It was like a PPI for $250

Haha. Well with no inventory to sell and fewer $500 oil changes due to less miles from people working at home they have to make it up somewhere.

I've heard of them. Big city dealerships on the east and west coast. Take your pick. Same cities that get away with $2,000/month or better in rent for a 400 sq.ft. studio apartment.

Fair enough. I just had mine changed at the dealership last month for less than half of that. Thought it had to be a fairly standard rate, +/- 10% or so, hence my suspicion that this was a trollish remark. If true though...well that sucks. Guess I should be grateful to live where things is cheap. Boring, hot, flat and brown but cheap.

It's not just Porsche dealers that charge through the nose, here's an Indy quote from close to me. More reason to DIY - $575 would pay for the cost of lift bars and the oil + filter combined.

Ouch!

Motul ten liters from Amazon $90. Filter kit is a little high but close enough. Actual labor is about 20 minutes not 1.5 hours, I don't pay people $185 an hour to watch my oil drain and neither should you. Not to mention $185/hour is insane for the negligible skill needed to change oil. Somehow Pep Boys manages to do it for a burdened labor rate of less than $50/hour. Does this Indy do an oil change four times better than Pep Boys? Fifty bucks to capture some oil for a sample? What does that take, two minutes and a few paper towels if some spills?

These crazy charges are aimed at moneyed dimwits who have never gotten their hands dirty or had a blister. Anyone that grew up wrenching (either out of fun or poverty) knows this is insane.

Edit: Just noticed it's Motul 300V racing oil so up the Amazon price to eight liters for $125. Still a heck of a lot better than the Indy's 6 liters for $204.

Yeah, I wish I was just trolling but it's a sad reality. My local dealer in So Cal (South Bay Porsche) was running a special for *only* $449, the normal price is $519. Bring your coupon. There was a post on the 991 forum a few weeks back by a guy who got dinged $619 for an oil change up in the Bay Area (think it was Livingston Porsche).

Boring, hot, flat and brown but cheap is looking better and better these days.

Just bought kit-oil/filter/plug/washer for 88 from fcpeuro, will return all used for lifetime warranty refund. Oil chg costs me only initial purchase and return shipping each time after that. Shipping approx 40-45 from tx-ugh. Takes less than hr set up and clean up. No fcp affiliation, just happy customer. Can’t bring myself to pay someone 200+ to do it.

1.5 hours for labor at $185/hr? By an indy? I'd be embarrassed to hand a quote like that to a customer. I had my last oil change done by Zippy Lube. Caught some flack over that here but the shop I used do Porsches on a regular basis and had the torque numbers for both the drain plug and the filter.

To the point though, they charged me for the actual time of labor which probably amounts to about 20 minutes....if that. Whatever the time they figured they spent, the total labor charge came to $27. I brought my own oil and filter kit.

Six 2 liter cans of oil for a 911???

That comes to over 12 quarts of oil.

Ridiculous.

Right, and 12 L is more like 12.7 qts.

Even my deep sump setup with a filter change only takes 10 quarts and my wife's regular car takes 8.5 quarts with filter change. Are the DFI engines different?

Not any difference with the DFI engine. My .2 takes 8.5 quarts.

Do you want to see more of the quote? It was for a complete fluid change (oil, gearbox, brake, coolant), spark plug & serpentine replacement. What you saw was only the oil change part . It gets better!

What would be informative is knowing what independent shop was the source of that quote...
