Default Any female 997 readers here?

2009 C2S 174K miles

Just curious. If you are female (you must be sure you are), some questions:

1 - Do you rely on a dealer for lite maintenance? (oil changes, plugs, brakes)
2 - Do you rely on an indy for lite maintenance?
3 - Are you a hard-core wrencher?

Your 997 story? How did you get into the 997 or the brand?

Peace

I am not a female, obviously. But the 997 is driven by my wife 95% of the time. She does not know anything about cars, gearbox, or even how to wash it.

1. I am her dealer. There is only one thing a real dealer can do for me, that is to program a key and they even eff it up.
2. I am her indy: oil changes, maintenance, car washes, occasionally throwing out pairs of shoes, napkins, food wrappers from the car.
3. I am her body shop. I will remove the bumper she has scratched, paint it with 2-stage color match to the code, install it and polish it. All she said was "don't make it look ugly"
4. I am her hardcore car husband. I over maintain her car so that she gets in, turns the key and drives off. She will not stop the car if the water pump goes south. She does not check the tires until the tread separates and slaps against the car.
a. oil changed at 5K miles, Tipt gearbox fluid changed at 30K, spark plugs changed at 30K, AOS changed at 60K, water pump changed at 60K, belt changed at 30K, all pulleys changed at 60K.
b. She makes plenty of short trips, so whenever the bores are scored, the engine comes out and the block will be re-sleeved. No complaints, this is her daily car.

There is one thing she will do. She will claim ownership of the car. She bites your head off if you say it is my car. It is "her" car.

Good for her and kudos to you for taking care of it all for her. Now to change the ratio of driving it in your favor, get another one, but in a 6-speed manual! 😁

Ha! We are all equal until we run for office or try and sell something. Sit in a market planning session and see the demographic charts go up on the screen.

I am not only curious as to the demographics of readership here on Rennlist, but who is deep into the joy of ownership of these cars. Hard to tell the latter, but maybe some data on the former is obtainable.

Peace

I do the same for my wife’s car, but thankfully it is a darn Subaru and not MY C2S!

She does seem to appreciate my efforts though (and has for many many years.

I love the ad Porsche used in Panorama showing the female tech doing diagnostics on a 911. Who wouldn't want to be going out with her?

This thread inspired me to ask my wife if she prefers the 911 or the m235i we used to have. She said the BMW because it was newer and had more features. She said she doesn’t understand why the 911 costs more money. So count her out from this discussion

she also drives a beater Corolla from before we met and has refused several offers from me to get her a new car…she’s definitely one of those people who sees a car as an appliance! I always think people probably see our garage and assume I’m a financial abuser LOL

If I was a woman and happened to drive a Porsche, and then stumbled across this forum?
I'd probably consider it confirmation that men ARE indeed all the things ladies say they are AND that men who drive Porsches are even more so.

It wouldn't be all of our fault, of course, but Rennlist definitely brings out the..... Well, you know what I mean

Well, I forgot to mention that "my" Porsche is a 2005 996 GT3. That one does come with a 6-speed.

Nah…. You guys aren’t THAT bad (most of you anyway).
I’m not a 997 owner but I’d say I qualify as a genuine (female) enthusiast.

And for the record, it’s never your fault (that’s what my husband tells me!)

Carry on…

Greetings from fellow female Porsche enthusiast. You are asking the questions I often hear when I show up at the local PCA Saturday morning breakfast gathering:
-I rely on my Indy mechanic for all maintenance, minor and major. I researched far and wide for this mechanic, and he has earned my trust and loyalty these past 15 years.
-I personally manage the wash/wax/condition. Believe me, the car has more “products” than I do.
-Got exposed to the 911 during my first marriage with spouse’s 996. Post divorce, I purchased a 997.2 manual which took nearly 5 months to find as I had a specific build in mind (a shout out to Rennlist as it was an invaluable resource). Tracked it a few times at Willow Springs where I became a better driver by trusting what the car is designed to do. Four years ago, I replace my reliable Lexus 330 for a 2016 958.2, which is my daily driver with the 997 as the 2x week ride. I like the brand, too.

While I have always admired the aesthetics of the 911, once I became an owner I gained a deep appreciation for the engineering, For me, no other car is as much fun to drive as my 997.

Hi Crossed Tips. Nice to see another female here. Looks like we joined around the same time.

A bit more about me:

I do simple maintenance (swapping brake pads, brake fluid bleed and flush) and prefer “supervision” for more challenging projects (rotor change). My dealer gets all my service and has earned my trust since 2013. I enjoy doing “simple” tasks and even if I’m having the dealer service, I like to understand what’s going on.

My car “resume”:

Lambo LP560-4 (new) (hubby saw it for the first time when the delivery truck arrived). Owned 4 years, 20k miles, one season at the track (until we came to our senses). It’s a long story why I wanted, and bought one of these. It was a great experience and while I wouldn’t buy another, I have no regrets and it added a lot to our lives that wouldn’t have otherwise happened without the car. Made several friends. Took trips. Drove tracks. Shared with LOTS of people and enjoyed seeing kids (and adults) sit in it and smile.

C6 Z06 (used) owned 3 years, manual, after-market race seats & 6 pt harnesses, 2 track seasons

Cayman R (used) 2013 - 2016 Peridot, manual, LWB, cage, harnesses, Fabspeed sport cats & headers, IPD Plenum, GT3 throttle body. What a GREAT first Porsche and fantastic car in many respects. If it had the 981 GT4 gearbox it would be the perfect car (for me). 3 track seasons.

981 GT4 - built to my spec LWB, Agate, lots of suspension mods to dial out understeer. 5 track seasons. Loved this car but couldn’t resist the next gen. We also bought a Racing Yellow 981 GT4 when we didn’t think we’d get an allocation to build.. The yellow car was more about him. Had it 6 mo and then sold when hubby got an unexpected allocation for a 991.1RS (UV, owned 18 mo, 6k miles).

1995 993 Coupe 6 spd bought Aug 2020 with 29k miles and now has 32k. Polar over Chestnut with rear seat delete. It’s an experiment. Wasn’t in the market for an air cooled but after listening to several friends fawn over their 993s, when I had the chance to buy this one (from a “993 friend’s” neighbor), I figured it’s now or never. I’m not totally sure I’m an “air-cooled” person but I wanted to find out. Spent quite a few bucks on overdue maintenance but it’s in excellent shape and SHOULD be reliable (for a 25 yo car). The biggest issue for me is trusting that I won’t be left stranded (hence no long distance trips), and it’s small compared to most vehicles on the road, with dated safety gear, so it can be unnerving in heavy traffic with large vehicles. But it is charming to drive, beautiful to look at, a totally different experience and now that it has new suspension it’s a lot of fun. My service manager owns air cooled, is PCA Nat DE Instructor (so is the GM), they race vintage and do HPDE. It’s not unusual to see air cooled cars in the service dept including very early 911 and 356 plus 944, etc. They also maintain full race cars for several drivers including a Ferrari Challenge car and several cup cars including 996 through 991. So the dealer is unique and their techs are very knowledgeable. They’ve earned my trust with excellent advice and consistently excellent service.

718 GT4 — my first (and probably last) PTS LWB, PDK, Slate Grey Y97 (the lighter of the two non-metallic Slate Grey options) came home 6/18/21 and so far has 2600 miles and 3 days at the Glen. After 10 years of manual I wanted to try the PDK and so far: LOVING IT! I enjoy manual but don’t “require” it to enjoy a car. I see value in both. I think this one’s a keeper. I don’t do nearly as much track as I used to but still enjoy it once in awhile.

For the record, hubby and I consider everything to be “ours”. But some cars are more about me, some more about him. The list above are “my” cars and he didn’t see the Lambo, Cayman R or 993 until I brought them home. I can add two BMW wagons to that list. We purchased all jointly but in some cases he had zero interest in the car (until he drove it) and if left to him we would not have bought it. I’m leaving out “his” cars (including two Panamera, Macan, I mentioned the 991RS, some Mercedes and AMG). I’m also leaving out a 992 we owned for a short time. Hubby had to retire from track driving after only a few seasons due to multiple back surgeries.

Dad was a car guy and got me started but never owned Porsche. His only German car was an Audi 100.

I took auto-tech in high school instead of going through home-ec (sewing/cooking/etc) senior year. I like cooking and some “domestic” activities but it was pretty cool being the only girl in auto-tech. And I was able to maintain the family cars (plugs, points, condensers - remember those?) and swap winter tires/wheels to the summer sets (Buffalo NY). The HS had a lift in the auto-tech garage and allowed work on personal cars after school. We lived nearby so it was fun helping care for the family cars (mostly Buicks except for Dad’s “fun” car which rotated over the years). Can you imagine a public HS with a lift allowing personal work in this day/age? I doubt I ever signed a waiver!

The Cayman R is the only car I’ve ever sold that I genuinely miss and think about. It was the first car that “taught” me how to drive on the track. The former cars had so much power I could do just about anything and cover errors. The R was by far the lower HP car and “punished” me for mistakes. I learned a LOT. And spent more time at the edge of adhesion than any prior car. I was actually able to explore limits in that car because the limits were so much lower than the Z06 (for example).

I have driven a few 997, including my friend’s GT3, but never owned one. Lovely car and that engine is very special.

Are y’all planning on having kids? My first born is due early next year, and I ain’t picky, so if there’s some way to marry him into your family we can work out the dowry.

Thanks for starting my day with a good laugh!! If your child becomes a Porsche master tech we could discuss adoption
