I have been wanting a 911 for a very long time. It was going to be the perfect 50th birthday present to myself. I had been watching the market for a while by January of 2020. Decent 2006/2007 Models were in the low to mid $40k range. I thought this is perfect. By next year I might be able to get a 997.2 for high forties. Then all hell broke loose in the 911 market. Now my $45k - $50k budget will barely get a high mileage 2006 C2.
is the best strategy to wait a year and see if 991 models start to dip into the high forties or is the market just inflating all 911s. I was under the impression that the low production numbers of the 997 were contributing to the inflated prices.

No way. Unless i'm not paying close enough attention.
When you say "high mileage 06 C2" what are we talking. If you're predicting 45-50 can barely get you there, now I'm intrigued as to what my 07 CS2 would go for at 115k
Prices for clean ones have gone up some, it's true, but there are still many out there if you search diligently. I think it's generally agreed that clean, low mile examples have stopped depreciating, though things may be complicated now due to some sellers' "swing-for-the-fences" approach to marketing their cars.
Keep searching. The spring season just got started.
997 market was completely undervalued for the last 5 years anyway and I think the 992 monstrosity is contributing to this more than people care to point out. These cars hit their bottom about 3 years ago - they've been on the rise since and yes skyrocketed when the frenzy hit last May2020. I always thought it was odd to see well sorted 997 cars for 32k asking prices. Those days are long gone and I don't see them coming back.
Thanks for all of the replies. I just feel like I’m waiting for the used car market in general ( and used 911 market specifically) to cool off.....but it just keeps going higher. Decent 991s are in the low to mid fifties so maybe by fall they will be in the upper forties.

I feel your pain. I just completed a career switch and was eyeing this year to jump into a 997. Then COVID hit and the market jumped. I was initially planning for a 997.2 C2S in the mid 50s, but now it seems that leaves me in 997.1 territory. Ive got a few month before I am ready to pull the trigger, but its definitely discouraging.
I’ve got an 08 C4S Cab manual transmission in Midnight Blue with 32k mileage. Great condition. I am planning on selling it next month and yes, even as a 997.1 I am expecting somewhere in the $50-60k range. If I market it well, with the current market and summer coming I could get $62k or so. Probably a bit more if it was a coupe but I know there are cab buyers. The manual certainly sits in its favor. And it has 2 sets of wheels and tires. That’s the market right now. Part of me wonders what the value would be if I held it longer term.

Great looking 911. I agree being low miles, a manual and summer around the corner you should do well. I admit I have a few things that I will not compromise on (yet?). For me it HAS to be a coupe, HAS to be a manual, and CANNOT be black or have sand beige (unless its a 997.2 with the black center console and the sand beige/black two-tone).

I am getting a Coupe. So I get that. And I have a Black dash with Slate Grey lower interior and seats. Nice look. Not a beige interior fan. I also do not even look at or consider black cars. Has to have some color. Love the Night Blue. But I found this local when I bought it so I compromised on the Cab and it has been a great car and a Cab can be fun.
If you *can* swing it, just think of it as a value store that you can drive (with some liability). If we are past the bottom of the market for the 997, any delta price increase is just like having the money sit in a savings account.
Good luck, hope to see you with one of these cars!

Lol, I Remember thinking similarly in the mid 90s where I thought to myself, I'll wait til 2010-2015, and by then my mortgage will be paid and this 993 turbo will be about half to a 3rd of its current price 😅🤣😂
