2008 Carrera S
I said it would never happen to me as the interior has seen neither food nor drink. In fact, I've hardly ever used the radio because it just isn't very user friendly and nothing sounds as good as the flat six.
I tried wiping them with a handkerchief and it's like the ***** are melting. No other switches are affected.
Lot's of threads on this if you do a search. It's a known problem with the "soft touch" paint they used on the 997.1's. It tends to happen to the temp and fan control switches on the climate control unit more often, but the two rotary ***** on the radio have been known to become sticky and peel as well.
Check out MACarbon. They'll hook you up. I swapped my climate buttons earlier this year and they look great.
Good news is that for the PCM *****, I don't think the PCM needs to come out of the car. I think you just gently pry the old ones off with a trim removal tool, then pop the news ones on.

OP has a .1 car.
(In the event anyone reading this thread has a .2 - don't attempt to pry the ***** off of your PCM. The center caps in each **** need to be removed revealing a small screw. That has to be unscrewed in order to remove the ****.)
Come on - I cleaned all the gooey coasheeshting off mine with a microfiber and the hand sanitizer we all have in our cars now, basically sitting at stop light , that includes pulling them off if you have a 997.1. Talk about making mountain out of a mole hill...
And the screws on the 997.2 are small as s$&t. Easy to lose beneath the seats
No joke.
When I was removing the one on the right, it dropped, bounced, and an hour later I finally found it. Lodged between the drivers seat track and the lower console area. I had to remove the drivers seat to get it.
