I am not sure my borescope will even work... I never fired it up. I purchased it in 2017, a cheapie from Amazon, and now the Chinese vendor doesn't support it... I have an email to them now. I hope Windows 10 can get it to view natively. Company is http://www.distianert.com/
BTW, Wayne suggested I turn the engine over by turning a wheel while in 1st gear. Great idea.

Not first gear, 7th gear. You want the opposite ratio. You'll never turn it in first. But I like the post about run it and look which way it turns. Much easier.

You will know if I have scoring or not. If I find scoring, I will never post again as I will have killed myself.
Bruce, bore scoring is like COVID. Everyone fears it to the point it kind of ruins their life on an ongoing basis. However, once a person gets COVID and survives, they can look back in the rear view mirror with great confidence and have only fun with no fear going forward.
My car had bore scoring. It took me a couple of years, driving my car all along, to save up for the repair, and another few months for the rebuild. At the time of rebuild, I specified all those innate M97 problems out of the engine -- you know, IMS (Solution), cylinders (Nickies), bearings, chain guides and tensioners, chains, pistons, bolts, etc., etc., and had all the more expensive maintenance done all at once. After all, when you're rebuilding an engine, you can do clutches, AOS, and all kinds of other things for price of the parts only. In this way, a significant part of the cost to repair bore score is really amortized in the form of prepaid expensive maintenance, but at a significant discount.
Life *after* bore score is much, much better, and your engine is essentially starting at 0 miles with no fears.
If this doesn't convince you and the thing that cannot be spoken out loud actually happens to you, please let me have your car, first. There's still well more than another 160,000 miles left in one of the most celebrated cars of 997-dom.

Like everyone says start the engine and then take a look under the rear bumper - you should see the belt spinning the pulleys, I check occasionally when my paranoia about the belt tensioner get too much! :-)
you can turn engines in the correct direction , just dont want to do it with timing belts or chains off.
That is what keeps the valves in sync, in timing,
I will post more tomorrow..... anywho.... for turning the engine, I had the rear up on stands, in 6th gear, and when you turn one wheel, the other turns in the opposite direction. So I had to jam the other wheel with two lug bolts and a breaker bar. To turn the other side, I did the same, two lug bolts and a breaker bar. It turns but you have to push.
As stated before, check the direction the engine rotates when it's running on it's own and turn the back wheel in the direction that makes the motor rotate in that same direction.
There's not much point in boroscoping through the spark plug holes. Any scoring you would see in the top section of the cylinders even with the pistons all the way down, would mean it's bad enough that your UOA reports would show higher than normal aluminum or the anti-wear additive package in the oil you're using dropping off significantly (the Zinc & Phosphorous numbers and maybe some of the Moly), or you'd have misfire codes from a loss of compression, or a really low manometer reading, like 3.
If you're just looking for something to do, that's a different story....
