Default One Ignition Key

I did a couple of searches but haven't come up with an answer.

My recently purchased '07 997 C2S only came with one key. I'd really like to have a spare just in case- even if it's just a valet type.

Is my local Porsche stealership the only way to go? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I went through this recently. I had one key and a valet key. With two toddlers I knew it was a matter of time before a key was 'lost'.

I bought the 997 key fob from Suncoast $199 997 Key Fob

Bought a key blank online (eBay for like $20) and had it cut at my local locksmith $70

Took the assembled key to my local dealership and they coded it for me and charged one hour labor $195

I think this was the most economical route.

2009 C2S 157K miles

I am pretty sure you could have skipped having the blade cut. Without the cut, it won't unlock the door through the slot, but it is irrelevant in the ignition switch. But for $70, who cares.

Peace

There is a company in England that makes key blanks for $30 or $40 then buy the FOB elsewhere
https://keysinthepost.com/product/porsche-key-blade/
You send them key# or a photo of your key and they send back perfectly cut key blade. Bought one 3 yrs ago

You can buy a FOB elsewhere cheap

@groovzilla Keys in the post I think this is the one.

@Bruce In Philly I did not know that about the key blank, but at least they look the same now!

Keys in the post is the name. They did mine when I lost a 996 key. My second key starts and drives the car but the fob is toast. My wife forgot to take it out of my pocket when she washed a pair of my pants. And she blamed me for not emptying my pockets. The nerve of some people. Expecting me to be responsible.

Anyway, let me know how much it costs when done because I'm debating getting a new fob and getting it programmed.

I used Keys in the Post as well, bought a fob from Sunset for $200, and had it coded at my dealer for $85. You can buy cheap fobs on eBay but they're just empty fobs, ie they don't have the electronics inside. They're for when you crack or damage your plastic fob but the electronics are still good.

Thanks all for the great suggestions- keysinthepost looks like a great solution. I don't need the buttons to function- just afraid of locking my key in the car...

Is there a secret place where the key code is hidden??

Yes yes yes - Keys in the Post. Sounds like one of those English TV Series but they do great work and fast shipping/etc.
**I don't remember my 1 key that seller gave me having any sort of # on it so they had me take a photo of my key black area - I didn't see any mention of that on their website just now but email them perhaps you have to request that service.

Good luck!!
All the best!

The key code needed for programming comes with the fob from sunset. That's why they are $200. The used key fobs on eBay are worthless without it.

I thought the key code comes from the original (existing) key. Keysinthepost needs the key code to engrave the new key- no?

Any idea how much a new key costs from the dealership?

Seems like the build-your-own approach runs about S450 - $500 bucks ($250-$300 for the parts and key cutting, plus dealer activation for about $200).

Does the dealer cost significantly more than that?

I bought the remote from the stealership and they price matched Suncoast pricing. Programming was $100. Bought a blank blade on-line and had a local shop cut it. All in I spent $350.

no. Keys in the post just needs a pic of the blade
the new key fob comes with an ID tag the dealership needs to code the key to the remote. Without this the remote won’t work.

I recently ordered a replacement key blade from KeysInThePost (UK company mentioned by others in this thread). I uploaded a pic of my key, and they sent me a copy that opens the doors. That's the cheapest way to get an additional blade.
