Default 2009 Turbo Cab

Bought this car from a BMW dealer who told me all the tires where new but after 8 thousand miles my left rear looks like this

not expecting them to tell me the whole truth but I don't think they did the rears but in all the excitement of the purchase they may have slipped in they only did the rears. does this look normal wear?

Looks like over-inflated. Hard to tell without seeing the sidewalls. I ran my 09 with no more than 37psi in the rear.

Depending on how you drive, for the rear tires to last 8K miles, it's NOT that surprising. So, I don't think the tires were new, but probably almost new and it also looks like you over-inflated them as middle of the tires if all worn out vs. sides.

What's your rear pressure. For sure either it's over-inflated or your rear alignment is way off.

You can also check the date of manufacture by looking at the DOT number. Last 4 digits are the week and year of manufacture. That might not tell the whole story because some tires might sit around for awhile before they’re sold, but it can provide some clues as to the age. I also think they look somewhat overinflated.

Does not look like overinflated. It’s too confined to the area of that one groove. It looks like a tire defect. How does the other tire look? I have run mine at 40 plus lbs and have a good 12k plus miles and no grooves are flat like that. But I just like going against the grain. Then again mine is a 4S.

Then you're fine. Always check pressure on your own. Maybe tire malfunction, is it same thing on both sides? Although, as I said earlier, 8K on rear is NOT unheard of, if you drive aggressively. Mine lasts about 10K but have equal wear, not like yours.

Are you running a wider front tire than the standard 235/35-19. If so, someone may have put that 305/35 on the back to keep the rolling circumference within a couple percent for the PSM system and the AWD transfer case.

Also, the outside edge looks scalloped or cupped. Run your hand along the tread area on the outside and see if the tread blocks have a sharp point on the leading or trailing edge of each block or if it feels like you hand is going over hills and valleys. That would point to an alignment issue - probably too much toe. If the blocks have pointy edges and you're trying to get a few more miles out of this set, swap the two rear tires so the rolling direction changes. That will smooth out the points eventually and change the wear pattern slightly.

The fronts are right 235/35/19's makes us wonder why they put 305/35/19's on the back. I think the dealer saw me looking at tread depth and replaced the tires with new on the front and used on the back.
