Good morning...I’ve read about adding a backup camera to 997.1s, but my search for 997.2s failed. It’s probably me, but has anyone done this successfully using the original PCM? My car came with a rear view mirror with front and rear cameras, video recorder, etc., but I’m not fond of it and would like a backup camera added to the touch screen.
Thanks, Perdido
I installed a Nav-TV RGB-PCM3.0 about a year ago. I find the video through my PCM 3.0 (997.2 2011) to be very clear. I had a local
installer place the camera above the license plate, but I don't remember the brand of the camera. I wanted to keep things as stock as possible.
The good: Excellent video and stock appearance.
The bad: Pretty expensive. The Nav-TV unit itself was ~800, + camera and installation. The Nav-TV.requires some internal wiring changes to the PCM
and, while a local installer could do the modifications, I had my PCM unit removed and shipped to Nav-TV to have them install he unit.
The other caution I would mention is that a thread on rennlist awhile back mention the Nav-TV unit failing if a car is on a battery tender.
So far I've not had the issue, but you might want to do a search on the issue.
Perdido- There is good discussion about 997.2 PCM backup camera install. My local professional store quoted 1k installed price for NavTV kit. Never got it done. It's in my pending task-to-do list. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...options-5.html
NAV TV sells a kit. It isn't cheap and requires adding on a video input to your stereo. I think general consensus is to just drop in a new stereo that easily accepts a camera and get the benefits of a newer system in regards to bluetooth, maps, apple car play, etc.
Update: The car is in for service to replace an FM antenna module and they are replacing the PCM as well since the volume control and mute function are whacky along with the SiriusXM portion. The service guy said most people just replace the PCM with an aftermarket unit to upgrade to the previously mentioned blue tooth and backup camera functions.
The positive side of this is that I have a 2020 Cayman to drive as a loaner and since I was considering one when I bought my 997.2 I have confirmed that I made the right choice. The Cayman handles really well, sounds horrible even with the sport exhaust turned on and feels ‘cheap’ compared to the 911. It’s a beautiful Guards Red car, but the interior feels and looks cheaper than my wife’s 2010 Toyota Venza! I hope I’m not offending any of you Cayman owners, but I am shocked by what I experienced.

I looked into retrofitting a camera onto my 09 997.2 but decided against it due to cost and the number of compromises associated with retrofitting the PCM. I went with an aftermarket Kenwood double DIN, with NAVTV MOST HUR and trim kit, and it works exactly as intended. Front and rear cameras plus wireless carplay.
