Default Was thinking of buying a 993 C4S but compared the drive

I've been on the hunt for a 993, and found an amazing example of a 1997 C4S with under 18k miles. Expensive but beautiful.

I went out to inspect it with the owner. Hell of a great guy. I drove my 2012 GTS out so I could really do a side by side comparison. To my shock, the owner said "Keys are in it. Go take a drive" I guess he could tell I was a real guy, but he didn't even see the car I drove up in.

As expected, it is impressive. The door closing thunk so many people mention. Comfortable and small. It was a tight little package. I didn't care for the feel of the clutch compared to my 997.2. The driving position felt more "upright" somehow. Another thread called it "like driving a truck" or something like that. I certainly wouldn't call it THAT but it IS different.

It's a great car and I couldn't help but appreciate it, BUT the 997 simply feels much more willing and ready to accelerate. The 997 is much more free-wheeling. The difference in torque was substantial.

The 993 is a beautiful car and when you see a time capsule it's pretty easy to fall in love. Then I have to say to myself "Be reasonable...if you get this you should get rid of another car" I can't say I would do that this time.

I'm in the same boat with a lot of different cars. They all seem to offer some enjoyment, but I don't want to give up my current rides to acquire a new ride. I already have 5 cars stuffed in my garage.

It is an endless quest. Some folk seem to approach it with less angst. I hate thinking I might one day say....I wish I kept xxx. My problem is as much sentimental attachment as anything.

I don't think you can try to be entirely rational about these decisions. It's all about the emotions. I have friends who seem to change cars every six months. I could never do that...even if it wasn't just the money.

Sometimes it i more fun to want than to have.

I certainly appreciate the 993 and if I could own a 997 along with a 993 (along with my other more utility cars) I would. But if it is an "either/or" situation, I don't think I could do it.

Same here. I'm really trying not to fall in love these days. Getting better about it. I think of it as dating. Come spring, I'll sell my GTI and my Crossfire.

I love my 997.2S as a daily driver. I was actually looking for a 997 as the later models don't impress me much. Therefore I get my daily dose of Porsche.
BUT - both my 993 are so more original to the Porsche idea. Driving is so much more engaging.

Man, I'd love a 993 or 964. But if I can ONLY have one, I have to say, I'm 99% sure I'm going with the 997. With my wife, and the use I want out of the 911, the 997 is just so damn good. It just offers so much.

Do I want an air-cooled car? Yes, 100%. But could I exchange the 997 for one out right, I cannot. Not at this stage.

Have the listing for that 993?

I've been wanting one since I was a kid. Went 997.2 C4S for my first one instead of 993. Do t regret it but still want a 993 but there are other want too that seem to win out and I haven't gotten the 993 yet. I too wouldn't get rid of anything for one.

The styling is sooo good.

Same here with "attachment" issues. It is just hard for me to let go of my P-cars. I have put so much time and tlc into them. I realize my other p-cars are not 911s, but I just did a canyon run in my oldest p-car and I was literally shaking with adrenaline when I got out of the car. Nothing in the canyons could keep up with me that day. I am continually amazed at the speeds and cornering abilities of my other cars and can't imagine selling them or even imagine a 993 giving me "more" of a thrill. Prestige, bragging rights and looks, yeah, but more of a thrill and adrenaline on a weekend canyon run? I just don't see it. I am sure it would be a blast in it's own way, but I remember when I could have pulled the trigger on a 993 or 964 for half the prices they go for now and just can't justify the price of admission. Plus, the reality of maintenance or a top end rebuild on a 25 year old car is very real and more likely to happen than not at this age. I do love them and have that itch for an air-cooled, but I will wait for the market to soften a bit more and or get a rack installed in my garage for more parking, but it will have to be an addition to the garage, not a replacement. Love the 993 C4S or C2S. Those are really fetching a pretty penny to drive these days.

He wants $94k firm for it. He bought it at Crave auto a couple years ago for more than that. Low miles under 18K. Looks all original. But....no records.

Ridiculous price for what you get IMO.

I still like the 993tt. Had a base 993tt and a 993tt S way back in the day and I have always kicked the idea around of getting another one. A close buddy of mine has one I still spend some time in on occasion. At the end of the day the car really does not do much for me any more, even the turbo. I definitely would not want a NA version. Nostalgia is good . . . for about a day or a couple of hours here and there. Purchasing a widebody 4S/tt/s to time capsule (i.e., not put many miles on) makes a fair amount of sense, but purchasing one to drive makes absolutely zero sense. For the price of turbo, I can get Nirvana . . . a 458 . . . and $90k for an S makes no sense whatsoever. Purchase a NB 993 and get the same, albeit not exhilarating, driving experience.as the 4S for 1/2 the price or get a 997.2 GTS manual Coupe for the same price and get a vastly superior car in every category.

They are lovely cars. I belong to the Manhattan CCC and we have a nice 993C4S which is fun, but perhaps my favorite car in the fleet is a heavily breathed-on 964 that is on coilovers, and bored to 3.8 with higher-comp pistons etc etc supposedly putting out around 350hp. It is absolutely lovely to drive. I love everything about the car, but it is in no way a dd. Still, if you have the room/$, a nicely reworked 964 or 993 is really a joy.

That said, I have already fallen in love with my 997.2S and don't see myself selling it. It is a great dd and for at least another couple years will be, until I perhaps get something else to put the miles on (I drive about 18k/year)...plus the color combo is what I've always wanted since I was a kid. I still pinch myself that I get to drive it everyday.
