Default steering control module replacement?

I’m replacing my Triangle bag wheel on my 09 997.2 (Manual Trans). I’ve ready dozens and dozens of threads about changing it. But I’m stuck with part of it. I need to change my steering control module (at least I've read I need to upgrade it to the later one). I’ve read a few threads on it, but still having issues removing it. Its like it’s stuck and wont budge. I’ve also looked for posts on removing the turn signal stalks. Which is turning up goose eggs.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, advice for changing the steering control module?

Just curious why you need change the steering wheel control module? I just swapped my steering wheel and airbag on my 09 997.2 Manual transmission and didn't need anything other than a new steering wheel and air bag. Apologies if I'm missing anything.

So based on what I read, when going from the Triangle bag to the new GTS or 991 wheels, you need to replace the steering wheel control module. Did you have the round airbag 997.2 wheel?

I've got a manual trans wheel (no multi function or heated) and going to a manual trans wheel. It would be great if I didn't have to change it!!

I had the round look (technically not round) airbag. Just did the swap yesterday. Posted some photos here https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...a-997-2-a.html

this is what it looked after I got the airbag out.

JT77, did you have any issues with the horn working or not working? I assume you didn't change the steering control module.

I held my breath about the horn but I didn't have any issues. The horn works. I didn't change any steering control module. There is a control box (part #95b.959.256.e) that the Multi Function (MF) buttons plugged into that sits at 6 o'clock on the wheel which I considered taking out but there was a connector that actually plugged into the 6 o'clock manual trim piece so I left it on the wheel. Everything was plug and play. The things I did do included the following:
  • removed PDK paddles
  • Removed Multi Function (MF) buttons/trim pieces and replaced them with manual trim pieces
  • Replaced PDK shroud with manual shroud to cover the paddle cut outs

Good info. I'll replace it this week and hold my breath on the horn. Hopefully that's the trick!

997.1 are said to require 997.2 modules (used so it’s already programmed), even then some 997.1 do the steering wheel swap without the module and the horn still works. I replaced my 997.1 module when I did mine.

Just changed the wheel. Heald my breath. And horn didn't beep.

So I guess I need to change the module. Any tips on changing it?

I’m not an expert but what wheel are you installing and what wheel did you have (manual, MF, etc.)? It might be as simple as activating the horn via durametric. I’m sure others on here can provide some troubleshooting. There’s also a lot of content on YouTube that might help.

I’m may be replacing my module for a steering wheel swap later this month and will let you know what’s entailed. On an side note, I bought a foxwell scanner and was able to code my existing 997.1 module and will try that first. My existing module is not the 99761328901 module required, but I can get into the module with foxwell and turn multifunction on. I’m curious if this will allow my horn to work.

I am waiting for a trim piece on my steering wheel and will be doing the swap as soon as I get it. I’ll keep you posted. As I understand it, you remove the clockspring (do not turn it) with the levers attached to access the module on the back and swap it out. I wasn’t able to find anything online that discusses how to remove it.

Going to the 2010+ 997 GTS steering wheel (some call it it the sports wheel). Manual transmission, no multi-function on either the new wheel or one I'm replacing.

I don’t think the steering module will do anything since you’re staying with a 997.2 wheel for your 997.2 car (the module should be the same).

Suggest having a look at the settings via Durametric, foxwell, or PIWIS to see if you need to enable the horn.

I'm going to try that before I replace the module.

Ok, I plan on doing the 997.2 to 991 GT Sport wheel. Need some help.

What I have:
997.2 Standard Steering Wheel
- PDK
- Heated
- no Multi-function

What I want:
991.2 GT Sport Steering Wheel (360mm)
- PDK (no Compass)
- Heated
- Multi-function

Do I need a new clock spring or just the GPS STMV1-H adapter?

I know MF will need to be enabled with PIWIS. That’s not an issue.

Also, my interior is Sand Beige. What do y’all think? Black steering wheel or stick with a Sand Beige wheel?
