Update on my end. I swapped the following into my 2009 997.2 manual car and did not require any coding for my horn to work:
  • Manual MF and heated 991.2 GT leather wheel from Suncoast in FL
  • I removed the MF trim and MF module and replaced the trim with satin black non-MF trim
  • I paired it with a new leatherette airbag from a 2017 Macan, I think, from Sunset Porsche in Oregon
I was coming from the non-MF, non-heated, triangle airbag steering wheel (which was a carry-over from the 997.1)

I did not get any airbag lights, CELs, and I didn't have to hassle with coding, or worse, perform a steering module swap.

New wheel feels like a big upgrade to the old triangle wheel.

@850tgul That new wheel looks way chunky! I love it..

I have a brand new black MF MT GT sport wheel winging it's way to me in Aussie..from Sunset OR. as well.
For my 997.2 MT.

Cant wait!

Funny you should say that as I thought the same from the picture. Must just be an optical illusion. It is actually not that chunky at all, refreshingly so. It is not much thicker feeling than my old triangle airbag wheel. I am not a fan of the modern trend (started by BMW M) of a super thick wheels. Not practical and getting kind of silly.

What color is the airbag? Luxor? Or Sand beige? If sand beige, can you share the part number you ordered?

Bumping this.

2009 997 C4S manual, multifunction without heated steering. Picked up 991.2 multifunction with heat. Got the airbag and the gprs adaptor with heat.

I know I need a new clockspring. 95565221121

Do I need a new control switch? Item number 997.613.299.02. Is this switch specific for heated wheels, as I know the clockspring is different for heated wheels. Is there a possibility my non heated 2009 has this already in it?

Thanks in advance.

In the first instance, contact Paul Li from GPS. List your current setup, then your desired mod. Paul’s team will tell you exactly what you need. I needed the 997 613 289 01 column module to add 991.2 MF to my non MF 09 MT. I used foxwell 530 to activate. These modules were in the PDK 911/Boxter. Mine came from a fellow RLer. Tim the Engineer. Good luck.

Thanks! Sent an email to Paul. Helpful guy.

Hoping to do a write up as there seems to be so much confusion on what is needed.

yes the .299 is specific for heated wheels. .289 is for non heated. I highly doubt your car has the .299 in it. Unfortunately that module is not cheap, and very difficult to find second hand. Note that you will need PIWIS to do the handover if you buy a new module. I have a heated Macan wheel working in my 2009 Turbo. The heating operation is kind of weird though, but I believe Porsche actually designed it this way. The heating only works when it’s below a certain temperature outside, maybe 65° or so, and then it turns off once the cabin temp is above that point. It also comes on automatically with the heated seats… I don’t know that the button on the wheel actually does anything. I can’t get the heated wheel on/off indicator to work in the gauge cluster like it’s supposed to with newer 997s that came with it from the factory.

Great information. You've filled in some holes for me regarding what I thought was an intermittent failure of the heated steering wheel to stay on. Thanks!!!

i bought a fox well nt530 to recalibrate the steering angle and enable the heated wheel. Hopefully that keeps me out of the dealer.

I have an NT530 as well but that can't do a new vehicle handover. A buddy has a clone PIWIS so I borrowed that and was able to figure out how to do the handover and get the new column module speaking to the rest of the car... there are youtube videos on the general process. The NT530 can tweak some heated wheel settings once the new module is programmed though. I'd see if your indy can do the PIWIS work for you, will certainly be cheaper than a Porsche dealer.

Hmm. That’s too bad. I’ll make the appointment with my Indy. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm going through this swap from the triangle wheel 2008 987 to a round 2012 987 R paddle wheel. The EU has to be changed because the horn on the triangle wheel has a loop electrical contact. The later wheel has the more classic ground connection for the horn. That being said I am now at6temting to put the old EU back in a get the coding on the Foxwell 530. Then install the new one to code it. I should have bought a used one that was already coded.

This thread is so complicated and mind numbing, but I think I have it all figured out. I know - famous last words right? I also emailed Paul and he told me exactly what I need. thanks to all who contributed.

I see that suncoast sells the new steering control module I will need (997.613.289.01), and since the unit is new, it will require programming via foxcon (which I don’t own) no matter for MF to work.

So question:

Where is the best source to purchase a used unit? Is this why guys are purchasing the entire turn signal stalk Used ? What do I search on eBay?

FWIW I have MF in a 2008 and want to retain MF in the new wheel

thanks!

they come up VERY infrequently. Like once a year. Better off just buying new and having it programmed. Or you can wait but it might be awhile.
