Default Oil Analysis Alternative

Most of us who are interested in oil analysis are familiar with Blackstone. There are other companies that offer this service however. I've been using Oil Analyzers (aka OAI) for the couple hundred samples I've done in the last twenty years for myself and my customers (Full Disclosure: I'm about to start my 23rd year as an AMSOIL Dealer). While OAI is a wholly owned subsidiary of AMSOIL, the actual testing is contracted to third party Horizon Laboratories headquartered in Indianapolis Indiana. There is no conflict of interest as to the test results. I recently did my second oil sample in conjunction with oil change on the '09 C2 I bought in 2018. Here's a few pictures and my oil report for your viewing pleasure. PM me if you'd like more information.

Sample kit with instructions, UPS shipping label and envelope. The pump and tubing are for engines with dipstick tubes, shown for illustration only, not usable for my car.

This AMSOIL 5W-40 is Porsche A40 approved. For this change I added 500ml of the Liqui Moly additive.

Dashboard of my Oil Analyzers account. All reports I or my customers have submitted are accessible to me here.

Sample Submission page of my account. It takes all of 30 seconds to complete, as my car has been registered on my account previously.

Sample ready to go into the UPS shipper. Note the QR code on the bottle. Because I did the submission online no paperwork needs to go with the sample.

My two oil sample reports. Newest is number 2. Notice the quick response by my using online sample submission and UPS shipping.

One item is Base Number (see Fluid Properties section lower right side). It is the oil's reserve alkalinity to counteract the acids formed in the crankcase. Oil I'm using starts out at 8.0, so there's plenty of protection left here. Blackstone charges an extra $10 if you want TBN reported. Aside from that the information is pretty much the same though I think the OAI report is a little more technical and there's a lot more content in my online account. I've never used Blackstone so don't know what they have available online.

I remember using Amsoil in a gas powered inboard boat I owned years ago. Previous owner I purchased boat from had been using Amsoil since the engine was new.
It was a big block Chevy motor and ran like a top. Very quiet and smooth.
I use Mobil 1 in my Porsche cars

Nice write up. What's the cost per sample if you do some sort of 20 or 25 sample bulk buy?

Why don't they provide the TAN (Total Acid Number too). Having the TAN with the TBN is much more useful than having the TBN alone.

Your fuel dilution number looks high though. More than 0.5 can lead to cylinder washing from my understanding. You might have a leaking high pressure DFI injector and the number is higher in the more recent analysis which might show that it's getting worse (leaking more).

1. Lowest bulk quantity would be case of 50 for $1365 on Preferred Customer program. These are postage-paid, same as Blackstone.

2. TAN is available at additional cost (Blackstone charge for TAN and TBN is $10 each, BTW). I've never used it as TBN is the measure I'm most familiar with. I've learned also that Oxidation and Nitration values reported also relate to TAN, so that's sufficient for me.

3. Yes the fuel dilution is a concern, but my wear metals are outstanding two samples in a row. My previous hobby car was an '02 E39 M5 driven approx same miles per year showed small amount of fuel dilution, though it's a non-DI engine. For the Carrera I've had no drivability issues; engine runs great and I've had no CEL faults in two years of ownership. Spark plug change last year showed nothing abnormal on any cylinder. This is the first DI engine I've owned, so I'll continue to watch it. For now I'm comfortable with 4K mile OCI. Appreciate your comments.

I’ll add my sample report. First time using this service. Was a little confused at filling out the paperwork but with emails eventually figured it out.

Nice report! Next sample do the online submission. No paperwork needed other than label on the bottle. I also recommend you call lab Customer Svc and add the Unit Time (miles on car) to this report.
