Default GT3 Shifter

Just picked up a GT3 shifter for my 997 S. Anyone have a good DIY i can follow for the install? Can this be installed with basic hand tools or should i let a pro handle it? Looks fairly straight forward except for the adjustment of the shifter cables (if necessary).

it’s wicked easy. If you have the locking mechanism for the shifter alignment is a breeze too.

literally pop in the cable ends and go.

Adjusting the cables right seems critical based on the threads I've read over the years by guys installing various short shifters themselves. Some ended up taking the car to a dealer or an indy to get it right. I had a B&M SSK installed in my -06 C4S and let my dealer do it based on the stories I had read. Absolute perfection without any trips back for fine tuning of the cables. One of the best mods for a manual car imo.

I agree with Sandwedge! Did the OEM many years ago and it made a world of difference!

I did mine myself. Not difficult but you have to take your time removing the console pieces.

What are you guys talking about “adjusting the cables” the factory cables do not have adjustment. You put the car in neutral, remove the shifter, put the locking tool on the new shifter and pop the cables in.

you can pop them out and repop them back in if you want to be real **** about zeroing it but the locking tool does all the work.

this is good to know! Do the cables really just “pop” out and in or is a toll required for removal and reinstall?

are there torque specs for the shifter console?

Cables just pop in and out. you'll see how once youre in there.

The 4 nuts on the shifter console are lock nuts so just make them snug with a 1/4 ratchet, they aint going anywhere.

One tip is to protect the leather on your parking brake because it can be easily scratched.

They literally pop in and out. This holds the shifter in place while you do the popping.

I just tightened them, they are small 10mm nuts, probaby gave them 20 ft/lbs

they are m6 nuts, so torque should be roughly 7lb ft. You don't want to snap one of those studs.
