OK, my winter project here ... wanted to upgrade to a 991.2 wheel in my 997.1, but my challenge was how to colour match it to the natural brown leather.
After considering options, I picked up a Cayenne wheel that was in rather rough shape from a local yard for a pretty good price, and sent it off to Exclusive Option to have it refinished in the natural brown.
While waiting for that to be finished, I picked up all the other parts to remove multi-function and the paddles and sourced a leather air bag.
Cant wait to get this installed in the car later this week, going to be a huge upgrade over the worn 997.1 sport wheel!
The Before
And the After
I would LOVE to see what this looks like in your vehicle. Could you please share a pic or two?
Any chance you could share a photo of your interior with the center console back in place? I have sand beige as well and wanted to see how the contrast works with the beautiful wheel against the full beige interior. Much appreciated!
I think he's asking which steering wheel is the best deal since there are so many cars using basically the same one: Cayenne, Macan, 911, etc. I could be wrong.

That’s what I was getting at. It seems like there’s a lot of options, some bolt on some need modifications. Basically looking for a wheel that looks like it came in my car from the factory, but a big improvement over base carrera wheel. In terms of budget, south of $1K.

Got it, thanks for clarifying . There are indeed quite a few options, I see two main ones:
- a SportDesign steering wheel for 997/991 will allow you to reuse your airbag (at least if you have a 997.2), and therefore keeping costs down
- a 991/981/Macan/Panamera steering wheel + new gen airbag
Believe it or not this project has actually been done for awhile but I made the mistake of using a cheap amazon hub adapter which ultimately caused damage to a clockspring which was the culprit of a PSM warning light that just wouldn't go away. I have to thank a forum member from this thread that literally gifted the Works Bell Hub adapter and a Porsche Crest Leather embossed horn button to me to allow me to complete my upgrade with no PSM error lights!
Oh in case anyone is curious, the magsafe phone adapter you see in the picture is from amazon and is actually quite functional and better, IMHO, than the way more overpriced Rennline version. It mounts to the completely unused CD slot, provides a central view of your phone and does not impede on the effectiveness of your ventilation system. (edited)
Finally after many searches I was able to find a complete OEM 991.2 smaller GT wheel with the black trim in my color with an airbag! It came as a PDK wheel but I purchased the manual rear cover (95B-419-798-B-5Q0) and removed the PDK paddles.
Can't wait to get this installed!!! Since my car is a 2009 (1.5) with the .2 black center stack I think this version will be a perfect fit and finish.
You inspired me to take the plunge with this. Trying to gather all the parts now. Any suggestions on where to look for the modules?
I kept checking eBay daily and finally one popped up in Australia for a decent price. I paid more for shipping than for the item itself but still it was less than what European sellers were asking. Just search for 99761328901 in there.
