But I have no warranty. And as random as PDK failure is (and the chances of failure very low), I really don't want to risk a $20k+ repair bill. I can see spending that on a car valued over $100k...but not one worth less than half that.

Am I overreacting? I do love this car. Thinking of replacing it with a Lotus Exige or a manual 997.2.
You got those numbers on this forum? All I can tell you is that the PDK on my -09 C4S failed and had to be replaced. Cost was $14,000 from a Porsche dealership (covered by extended warranty) but more importantly, this was more than 4 years ago and the cost of PDK replacements have gone down, not up. Here's a used one on Ebay for $7,500: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-Carrera-911-997-09-12-PDK-Transmission-51k-CG100-RWD-3-6L-9G1-300-011-02-/174101927870?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

Would be surprising if others at similar price points couldn't be sourced from salvage yards around the country. Forget the $24,000 number imo.

So unless I missed the announcement of a pretty dramatic price hike of a PDK which if accurate now exceeds the cost of a new engine, I'd say you've found some bad information. And no less important, PDK failures as others have pointed out are very rare so try to rest easier .

I worry about scored cylinders and if my engine went now, I would have paid well over $100/mile. On the other hand, what am I really working all day for? My car gives me so much joy. Worst business decision ever. Best emotional decision a material item could get me.

997.1 engine rebuilds/replacements are also quite expensive - do you see everyone dumping their cars?

Manual 997.2 cars are rarer and you will be paying a premium to get one of those (a like-for-like with your car). Add in taxes and other charges (transporting the car to your place etc) and you would have paid half of what your own estimate for the PDK replacement cost is As others said, just keep enjoying it. In case it does go kaput, replace with a used one and get back to enjoying it!

Seems like a medicated support group is needed for 911 owners. Letting the internet get you worked up about things is the new high blood pressure. If it isn't broken already, continue to drive and enjoy it. Otherwise sell it and don't buy a car at all since they can all break.

Thanks for commenting....but not sure how saying that PDK failure is rare, then telling us about replacing your failed PDK helps

I certainly prefer manual over PDK by a wide margin but 90% because of driving experience and only 10% because of the failure risk element.

That said, a 10-15K potential risk item on these cars is not crazy given the cars were $100K+ sports cars.

The premium for manuals will keep getting wider over time, however, so if you want to justify swapping into a manual car, even taking a bit of a bath on your PDK car today, it will probably be a wash financially. Given your stress level, it will almost certainly be worth it.

Will say that when I bought a Boxster (986 Boxster S) recently, the first thing I did before even driving the car home was to do the IMS bearing upgrade. That was my insurance and worth every penny regardless of whether the car would otherwise have ever failed. But that is a sub $20K car and where the cost of catastrophic failure was very different (relatively speaking).

You should look into an aftermarket warranty for the large parts. This will give you piece of mind. And make sure it's documented that it will be covered. And negotiate/shop around on the price for the warranty.

Overreacting. Based on the number of PDK 997s out there and the number of failures and replacements I've read about here, the percentage for failure is miniscule. I've read about a few 991 failures and sandwedge's 997 failure and maybe a couple more. Don't confuse Macan PDK failures with 997 ones as it's a different version of the PDK transmission and I've seen a few more of those. With used ones under $10k and the dealership replacement sandwedge did for $14k, I'd say your risk/cost assessment is better than where you said it would need to be to keep the car. Take the ad down and enjoy your car. Personally, I'm not a PDK guy, not because I'm worried about the failure, I just prefer the enhanced engagement with the vehicle from a manual transmission, and with one of those I can do the clutch job myself for a a couple thousand dollars. With 2 997.1 cars I already have a spare clutch in the parts cabinet for whichever one needs it first. But I wouldn't not own a PDK car if that's what I wanted for fear of failure and replacement.

I feel better knowing I can go to a Porsche dealer for PDK replacement at a cost of $14k. I mean...it’s still going to sting but it’s better than $24k. I’m thinking of keeping it.

If you enjoy the car and haven't thought about selling until now, then you're overreacting. If you've been considering selling and are using this as your excuse to list it, then by all means move forward.

If you want peace of mind, sell the car and get the 6 speed manual. Since you are into convertibles, they are more available out there and price is lower than a coupe.

A guy I know had an "accident" with a post when his failed.... Just saying... Doesn't take much to total a 911. I don't suggest you do that if yours starts acting up, but that is how he got out of the situation.

He drives an F type Jag now and is in love.

Not sure I understand the rationale here. Just because my own PDK failed and I'm here to talk about it means failures aren't rare?? Honestly I can't think of another one I've read about here. Doesn't mean I couldn't have missed it but it certainly isn't a big topic discussed on the forum, at least not from what I've seen.
