Sam's club in my hometown has Mobil 1 0-40 for about half the cost at Suncoast. Always wondered why Porsche keeps insisting on Mobil 1 for all their models if there are other brands that hold up better and longer. One argument could be that they want to sell and install new engines due to inferior motor oil being used but that makes less sense when you consider how many of their cars are under warranty.

I don't think Porsche "insists" but I bet there is a lucrative marketing deal between Porsche and Mobil that is driving the recommendation. Local dealer here has used Castrol and will use Mobil1 if requested. I think as long as oil meets A40 specs you're OK. Admittedly not a long sample period, but in 13 years of participating in this forum I never seen a report of engine failure due to use of inferior oil. After I had IMS Solution installed shop used LiquidMoly - lots of good A40 alternatives to Mobil1 available.

Just a thought. Maybe Mobil 1 is a great oil.

Every other month on line sams club has 6 quarts for about $25.

Motul and Mobil 1 are all good brands - make sure that the product you use meets the specifications in the cars handbook - as there are many varieties of Mobil 1's with different specifications. - some of which are not designed for Porsches.. doesn't make them poor oils - just meant for different applications.

Bad choice of words on my part. I guess "insist"t came to mind since Mobil 1 is the only motor oil available at the Suncoast parts page. And you may well be right that there's some kind of business relationship between Porsche and Mobil.

Use the weight and Porsche designation listed in your owners manual. New oils are better than previously. I asked my Honda tech. nephew about the 0W20 in our Lexus, thinking there isn't enough film strength. His advice, use what the manual tells you.

Lexus is even using 0W16 now.

5w50 is A40 for temps >-13 along with 5w40

If it's available no reason not to use it

And just a thought about Porsche and Mobil 1. Maybe they looked at all the oils out there and Mobil 1 is the best?

And we assume that the manufacturers even care what happens to the car over the longer term (after the expiration of the warranty)?

Right now Porsche is selling 5w-50 for M96 engines, which are nearly identical to M97s in 997s. Porsche knows these engines better than anyone else and that is the weight they are saying to use. A liter is slightly more than a quart, so about $16 qt from them or Mobil 1 5w-50 as low as $4.50 qt on sale.

I'm learning about oil and what I understood 8100 xcess is for street usage and 300V track, which I think means the additive package of one for better fuel economy and longer change intervals and the other maybe change after each use. I'd like to hear persons knowledgeable about oils tell us what Porsche dealers are putting in 911s of our era, and if 5w-50 is the best weight.

I just change my oil using the 300V. Been using the Mobil1 0w40 from what the previous owner was using but felt like the Motul 300V {5w40} was better overall. Pricey, yes but hopefully more protection. I plan on 3000 mile intervals.

I can't offer the knowledgeable opinion that you are seeking on this, however here is some specific data that you can reference (from Motul) on the 300V and 8011 Xcess products:

For street use just use a A40 approved oil in the correct weight for your region and way more importantly than oil brand ...Keep the bloody oil clean / changed frequently (no more than 5,000k max) and you are good to go without need for worry or concern.
