Default body work

Hey all.. planning a big paint restoration project. I picked up an orbital polisher and a few cutting agents and have done a ton of research. Couple questions before I get going...

1- Anyone have experience in removed a clear bra? I assume you can not polish over it, and its in pretty rough shape.
2- I have the aero kit and the lowest part on the front is completely shot. I can try to sand it down and paint it, but if it's a separate piece may be easier to just remove and clip on a new one. If anyone has a link to the part, let me know...

Thanks!

Looks like a fun project. For sure you will want to remove the clear bra. You might also want to check out the Rennlist Councours and Car Care forum.

Be very careful with those cutting compounds and an orbital polisher, especially on a dark car. If you're too aggressive, you will cut right through the clear coat into the paint and a detail shop won't be able to bail you out. I also do not like orbital polishers on dark cars. They create swirl lines that reflect as curved scratches when the sun hits them a certain way. I do any polishing or compounding by hand and in straight lines the way wind would flow over the car - finished product looks much better with fewer scratch reflections that way.

Both of these cars were done by hand with a Turtle Wax Jet Black Kit, yes Turtle Wax. It's unique in that all the products in the kit are black in color so it fills any small imperfections. After the 3 steps in that kit (clay, polish, wax), I then do a final coat with Opti-Seal to make it last until the next year when I do it again.

I have great success with orbital polishers to remove swirl marks. Removing large scratches is difficult, but compound selection is key. On factory paint a circular buffer is what I choose first and follow it with an orbital with polishing compound.

Rotary scares the hell out of me... I was going to use chemical guys with a torq 10fx orbital... starting with something like a v36 and going more aggressive if needed. I have a lot of swirls. I have no fantasy that it will remove deep scratches, but the paint is in rough shape.

I'm also going to use doctor colorchip for a lot of the small chips. I'm still trying to figure out if I should use that before or after polishing..

Check out AMMO NYC's videos.

The pad you use and how much material is on it have a big effect also.
