Hi everyone, I’m new to posting but intend to join club for meets etc. OK just put my car in to main dealer health check reports front shocks protruding through turrets too far is this a common or known problem?
Thanks for any help advice . I’m in Birmingham
2008 C2S 997.2
It's common enough for the strut mounts to fail... but maybe less common for the struts to be protruding through the mount point (I think that is what they meant?). Did you have rattling when driving over uneven road?
Hi thanks for that reply. No real rattling that I’m aware of but to be honest I tend not to drive on pot holes etc.
Ive just spoken to Porsche & they have invited me to go over the matter with the technician which will be great.
hopefully it’s just top mounts that need replacing.
So top of turret there’s a plastic cap this should push fit into the turret inspection hole I guess but they can’t due to interference from the suspension threads protruding slightly beyond the top lip of the turret.
Surely this is due to top mounts being badly worn or perished
So the technician who was actually the service shop manager wasn’t very helpful or clear... all he said was that they didn’t look right and appeared to be protruding. He did add that it may be that C4 suspension could have been fitted in error but they would not be able to identify or understand the problem without stripping down the front suspension £800+ .
Im disappointed with Porsche after spending £1125 on servicing I would expect & apreciate more help because the car drives fine and I had the geometry checked when I bought the car hence my tyre wear is normal & even.
ive just bought top bearing mounts that are simply bearings housed in cups so before I start stripping down is there any advice on offer please.
Your top mounts are shot. The rubber bushing is destroyed and the strut is pushed upwards. Here's a healthy looking one under the curved washer courtesy of Bruce (https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...pasm-cars.html)
It's pretty dirty and rusty in there. How many miles? Do you know where the car was before you bought it?
At a a minimum you need to replace the strut mounts. While you're in there, replace the bump stops and the bearing plates. You may also choose to just replace the struts as well.
Thanks for this help Yes LoL I don’t clean my Porsche much and was parking under trees at the rear of my garden. However I recentry cleared some space in my garage so can store it properly now. I’ve owned this car around 3 years but yes it needs a deep & thorough cleaning.
So mainthing is my suspicions were top mounts as I heard they can fail and in few cases bend. I’ve just purchased top bearings so now feel confident to replace the top mounts as health check didn’t report any other suspension failings such as leaks weeping etc.
However I might search out the Bilstien B16? Coilovers With the active ability.

Reason: Typo
B16 is a good option too. Good luck! This is a relatively straightforward job on the RWD. You'll need a gland nut wrench or a pipe wrench to hold the top washer while you turn the strut mount nut with a pass through socket.
Yup I'd say those are shot. Never knew they could fail that severely. Im sure if thats jacked up and the wheel is off the ground the strut would knock up and down.
Keep us posted. Also, I would get that battery tray area cleared out and pull the rubber drain plugs on either side to ensure they aren't clogged. You have some corrosion in there starting and that could be bad news.
Hi everyone sorry for the long delay as I’ve been very busy so left the car in my garage. Anyhow I’ve started today my god those mounts are bent and deteriorated. This is actually a poor design I think.
I’ve already bought all the parts OE spec plus Eibach springs... but after seeing how badly this is bent I’m thinking I should have just gone coilover as they have upgraded mount blocks. Oh well maybe next time I’ll go that route.
