Default 997.2 Burning Oil

Hi all,

52K miles, changed to DI-40 2K miles ago, and had to add about .7 liters recently. Tail pipes do get some soot between washes, and no leaks detected, but there was no metal shavings in my oil filter 2K miles ago.

Is .7 liters in 2K miles within the realm or in-spec? I have heard yes, and no...looking for a definitive answer on this.

Thanks!

I just completed a 3200 road trip and my 997.2 with 35k miles used 0 oil. My 997.1 would used about a quart during the 5k mile range between oil changes. I think you're probably OK.

How long have you had the car? One liter per 600 miles is within Porsche specifications. My 997.2 eats no oil between 5000 mile changes. I think it loses one bar between oil changes. I would not be overly worried at that consumption rate.

I have had the car since December. I changed the oil with Mobil 1 when I purchased it, and again 4K later at 50K to DI 40. No glitter in either oil change.

That kind of oil consumption doesn't seem alarming. The experts here will tell you what you need to worry about is a spike in oil consumption. Continue to monitor your oil consumption, and it if stays roughly the same over the next 2k mile interval, you should be good.

Oil burn seems to be all over the place.
My 997's:
2005 997S: 1 qt every 800 miles - no soot on tailpipe no BS inspection
2007 C4S burned 1/3 qt every 1600 miles - no soot on left tailpipe and buyer did not do BS inspection.
2007 997S I just purchased burns no oil in 3000 miles - Previous 2 owners are 2 RL members so I didn't do bore score inspection
Friends 997S burns 1 qt every 650 miles and BS inspection fine as well as oil analysis

IMO, the oil burn rate is no indication of BS wear---->

Send samples of your oil to blackstone to get a baseline and monitor it oil change to oil change specifically looking at aluminum content and silica content. Just enjoy the car and don’t be alarmed.

+1 doclouie.

First year I had my car I feared everything I read on the forums. 30k mikes later I realized you need to treat forums like the emergency room. You see a lot of crazy **** in the ER but that doesn't mean it happens across the population at large.

Good that you are keeping an eye on these things. No rhyme or reason why some cars burn more than others. My 997.1 burns zero oil but others burn a quart or 2. I've used Motul 5w40 for 7 oil changes. Note: the only time it did burn a quart was when I used Swepco 15w40 my indy recommended. So some oils can burn more than others.

The real thing to track is if the trend starts increasing.

I second a lot of what was said. I had a 996 that burnt nearly zero oil. A 997.1 that burned about 1 quart per oil change. A 997.2 that burned about a quart every 600 miles! Borescope was fine. And a 981 Cayman that burns maybe a half quart per 5000 miles.

Thanks all for the input. It is what I expected, but it is comforting to get feedback nonetheless.

Soot in the tailpipes is not uncommon with DFI engines. I get it on both my 997.2 and BMW 335i.

0.7 liter in 2K miles seems very normal. I have to add 0.4 liter (1 bar in the indicator) every 1K miles on my 09 C4S that only has 23K miles.

We are talking large buildup of soot on "left" tailpipe (drivers side) which can be telltale sign of cylinder scoring on left bank.

WRONG. The exhaust chis-crosses.

And the 9A1 motor throws a ton of soot. So, it's irresponsible to leap to bore scoring.

I was of the understanding that on a 997.2, the exhaust does not cross...
