Having a hard time deciding what to do. Last month my friend who I sold a 1958 356 to in 1998 called me and said he was going to sell and asked me if I wanted to buy it back.
Since my wife limits my toys, I can't have 2 Porsche's and I also don't have the room in my garage which has been a 30 year issue. I also like to change out my Porsche's every year or 2 since getting into the water cooled cars.

Sooo I put ad on Seattle CL to sell my car at $36,750 ----> Have 2 guys who want it. But then my friend called me and got cold feet and is hanging onto his 356 - Told both interested buyers of my 997 I changed my mind due to 356 not working out

Ironically 2 weeks ago I was looking at a 1979 911sc in a beautiful paint to sample grey w/black leather and seats have been redone. Really nice car. That guy also decided he didn't want to sell. His ad on CL was terrible, crappy photos, horrible description/etc and he complained about showing it/blah blah blah - When I looked at it/drove it I was really impressed that it was so tight for having 140K miles but seller put new Koni's all around and is a mechanic with a shop on one of the Islands near Seattle.

This afternoon the seller of 911Sc texted me saying he will sell if I want his car. He is after an old Jaguar he has been after.
The 911SC is a super great deal at $30K and will include the original black Fuchs wheels and brand new Michelin tires----> I told him I'm interested and will see him next week when he gets back into town.

So I contacted the 2 guys via text who were interested in my 997.---> one guy texted me an hour later explaining he wants to buy my car and meet Friday at 10am and has check already to be issued to me at Boeing Credit Union - He lives about 10 minutes from my house
About 2 hours later other interested buyer who is about 5 hours away wants it and is bummed other guy called me 1st but totally understands - He will be 2nd in line

Now I am having second thoughts about selling my 997C4S
I love my car but having an aircooled 911sc back in my hands at a really great price is hard to give up - I guess I can always find another 997 someday which I know I will want.

I'm curious if there are any aircooled guys out there who can feel my pain??

I love it, buy the SC! Since following you on the 996 forum for years I know one thing, you need a new 911!!

That’s a nice looking SC, but as you said you can only have one. The other part is you change your cars every few years, What will you enjoy more ?

Follow your gut....sounds like the SC is calling your name.....

I'd say finding the older cars in such good shape will get harder and more expensive, and you said it yourself, you can always find another 997.

I sold my SC about 3 years back at ~180,000mi, still in top (mechanical) shape - 150k mi leakdown/compression showed near new numbers (~3% per cyl leakdown, lowest compression was 6psi below max, 174 (believe max was 180? may be wrong.) I probably sold it a year or two too early, prices were still reasonable, could've almost doubled my money! especially if I had it properly resprayed. D'oh!

But I don't think I could go back, unless it was a 2nd Porsche, or the sole intent was to buy one and sell it when prices go higher. The power difference, the handling, the ride quality (and creature comforts) are so much better in the 997, not quite as raw as an SC, but I was not disappointed in the transition. although the SC was insanely reliable (once I got rid of the CIS fuel injection and went with EFI), not having to do something little every month to a car is really nice.

Just my $0.02. it is a really good lookin SC!

If you went back and found some of my old RL posts you would have seen my word for word description matching yours of why I appreciate the more comfortable 997 so much.
Tough choice but I am leaning toward the 911sc but also trying to figure out how I can store a 2nd Porsche undercover
I'm also an aircooled BMW Motorcycle addict and would need to find room for this beauty I'm buying tomorrow - 1961 BMW R60/2. I can fit one motorcycle and one Porsche in my garage along with my drums and rental property tools/crap. My garage is a disaster

Searched for a long time for this BMW and have my Uhaul motorcycle trailer on my Land Rover in my driveway for the purchase tomorrow.

Why don’t you rent storage space and free up garage space? Will the 911 sc increase in value? Perhaps it is an investment! Yes cars are not typically good investments. I have a 1992 968 in mint condition but when I got the targa I realized I enjoyed that car more. Still enjoy driving the 968, but. Fortunately I don’t have garage space issues, yet.

Or, you can wait for another 356 to come available. I think that is where your heart is. I know my heart is always pulled toward the 356C but I just don’t think I can party with my 997.2. Plus, wifey would kill me if I started looking at a 356. We just purchased a beautiful Cayenne 958 CTT.

I sold my '80 911SC at 190,000 miles right at the time when prices were shooting up. It was sweet, tight, with a rebuilt 915 box. It wen to Germany!
If the Porsche is not your everyday car, then a 911SC at a great price with the original Fuchs at $30K is a good deal. OMG, lose those phone dials.
There is always another 997 somewhere, down the line, sometimes. They make a ton of those.

I had the same problem with garage space and toys. I ended up renting a large storage space as a 2nd garage and it works well.

I keep my drums in garage, have that BMW motorcycle coming today and with all my crap, I have no room for a second car - Even If I got rid of drums and motorcycle and added another Porsche I'd have no work room for small projects which keep me busy.
We have a Victorian House and small 2 car garage - Tight

Out of my air cooled 911, the SC was my least favorite.
The 3.2l G model does everything way better. Just the G50 tranny is worth going for an mid 80's G model. The soggy shifts of the SC transmission was not my thought of joy.

That is just personal preference and I love how the G models look, the 997 is the perfect Porsche for me.
This model takes all the Porsche core elements to the future and is great in every application.
No matter if used as DD, joy rides or track use.

The real question is how do you use the current car and how will you use the SC? If you like having a car that you can just get in a d drive, don't have to worry about what spare parts are with you, like actual a/c at the pees of a button, like tighter handling, etc then the SC really isn't a good match to that use case.

If you drive the 911 occasionally and prefer the nostalgia and smell of the air cooled cars, don't care that the civic riding your *** is actually faster than you and you just want to cruise around, then go with the SC.

Don't get me wrong - it's awesome, it's just practical to try and use it the same way you use a 997.

I have a 74 914 and a 79 928 convertible for my doses of old school, but which one do d I get in to go to the airport this morning - yep, the 997.

Here's 2 pieces of advice - instead of complying with the wife limits, get her a Porsche too to change the equation. Once she gets it, you'll be able to have more than 1.why do you think I have a pink 997 in my garage, and now out vacation car is a Cayenne instead of an Infiniti?

Option 2,check out the outdoor car capsule storage solution that encloses the car in a durable inflated bubble and protects it better than a cover if it will be stored outdoors. Of course the wife and neighborhood are going to have to sign-off on that too.

I would never trade a 997 for an SC, unless it is to thinker with and drive occasionally.... if it's a regular car you drive, not a chance I would do it...
