My '09 is my daily driver. I'd love an air-cooled car but I can't justify replacing a modern car with an almost 40 year old car. With my recent purchase of a TR6, my wife would leave me if I brought another old sled home.
OTOH, if my '09 was a toy, I would do your proposed deal in a heartbeat since i don't get sentimentally attached to cars very easily. Any time i can buy an old fun car, drive it for a few years and sell it for what i have in it, i consider that a no-brainer. I think the '79 is one of those cars.
That's a tough one. I agree with what's said above - if it was my daily driver, I'd keep the 997.
For me they're both occasional cars, so I always go round and round over which I'd sell first. That's probably why I've kept both of them so long.
I'd also think based on the value of your 997 you could probably get a G50 car if you work it right.
The real question is how do you use the current car and how will you use the SC? If you like having a car that you can just get in a d drive, don't have to worry about what spare parts are with you, like actual a/c at the pees of a button, like tighter handling, etc then the SC really isn't a good match to that use case.
If you drive the 911 occasionally and prefer the nostalgia and smell of the air cooled cars, don't care that the civic riding your *** is actually faster than you and you just want to cruise around, then go with the SC.
Don't get me wrong - it's awesome, it's just practical to try and use it the same way you use a 997.
I have a 74 914 and a 79 928 convertible for my doses of old school, but which one do d I get in to go to the airport this morning - yep, the 997.
Here's 2 pieces of advice - instead of complying with the wife limits, get her a Porsche too to change the equation. Once she gets it, you'll be able to have more than 1.why do you think I have a pink 997 in my garage, and now out vacation car is a Cayenne instead of an Infiniti?
Option 2,check out the outdoor car capsule storage solution that encloses the car in a durable inflated bubble and protects it better than a cover if it will be stored outdoors. Of course the wife and neighborhood are going to have to sign-off on that too.
All good points - I use my Porsche as a Sunday driver/out to dinner on occasion---> I love my Land Rover and use it all the time. But don;t get me wrong, I love my P-car and enjoy the hell out of it. If anything it becomes a much more special car when you use it infrequently.
In the old days I used my aircooled 911's much more frequently and made many round trip drives(about 25) from Seattle to LA or SF---> These days I don't get a lot of joy doing that, and as a matter of fact I bought my 2007 997S 2 years ago in Houston and drove as far as LA and shipped it up to Seattle because I got sore *** and tired of driving.
I have the most understanding wife who puts up with all my crap - I'm sure she would agree to let me have the 2nd P-car but it just isn't practical w/my lack of space - And getting very difficult finding a 1978-1988 aircooled 911 for less than $40K that is a decent color
The 911SC I'm debating has had the head rebuilt about 20K miles ago and is a nice example - Also the paint to sample grey color is really nice

Agree with many of the sentiments above. You stated that you like to switch out often. I wouldn’t want to daily a 40 year old car, but the SC is one of the greatest of all time. That one looks amazing and you’re not keeping your current 997 forever anyway. Enjoy whichever one speaks to you!
Now I'm wondering, could you explain why the SC would be better than a UR 911, 3.2l G50 G-model, 993 or 997?
I agree that OP's SC pick seems in beautiful shape but this makes it tough to justify mod's like transmission or motor change.
I never said it was better than any of those. But it is a real classic, and he states that he never keeps a car, preferring to swap out about every 2 years. So for HIM, he should follow his heart. Not for anyone else. My heart is owned by me perfect condition 997.2 GTS, but that’s just MY preference. I never expect or need others to feel the same as me. I was just replying to his public question!

I owned a 79 911SC...if I was buying an aircooled car, would go with a Carrera or 964. The HVAC in the SC was not up to modern standards, although better than my 69 911. If you want a lightweight tossable car, you need to go for a 69-73 car.
Considering the great price of that 911SC, the good condition, unique PTS color and your need to "scratch that two year itch," I think this says "BUY ME" all over it. Go for it; you only live once. But please put the OEM black Fuchs on first thing, and post pics!

Groovzilla... If your photos of your past are any indication of what your photos in the future will look like... then I could totally see you starting another thread many years down the road about how your looking at a 20 + year old classic Porsche again to change things up and it will be a 997
I am in a different camp then you because I just can't let go for fear of regret, and because I am so attached to my cars. I know them like the back of my hands. My oldest Porsche I have owned almost 20 years now. In some ways I admire and envy your carefree attitude towards swapping out Porsches every few years. Makes for a fun and exciting routine...
Ideally I would hold on to the 997 and purchase the 911 SC and drive it around for awhile. See if it really scratches that itch and wild hair you got going. You may have some clarity right away and know for sure which one you want to keep so that you can free up some money, not worry about garage space, and sell one or the other. Some times going back to an old flame is fun for awhile, but then the reality of living with that old flame, baggage and all, starts to bring back memories of why you let her go in the first place.
What ever decision you make just remember... 1st world problems

I feel your pain, trust me I do...sold a 911E coupe last December, and owned a few really cool air-cooled 911's. I had an SC they are great cars but not the pinnacle of air-cooled in my opinion.
You must keep both .....Trust me I know the feeling my wife just said I can have a third.
Buy her a ring or something really nice and tell her you can't part with your 997 and the SC is just too good a deal to pass up. Life is too short ...Live large and happy
