Default Question regarding engine mounts bushings.

Guys, while gathering the things I'll need for maintenance this spring, I am questionning changing the motor mounts or not at this point.

Whay has me asking about it, is that while doing my best to find out all that was done through the years by previous owners, I called the Porsche/ferrari/Lambo indy that did the PPi on my car to ask a few questions... while he did agree that the coolant reservoir, idler pulleys and coil packs were regular maintenance 911 stuff, he did say that in 30 years he never changed the motor mounts on a 911, and was questionning why I had it on my list!!!!

So before going ahead and tackling such a job, I decided to check in any way possible if I needed them NOW....

So I thought that I could simply use my jack and jack the engine up to see if it looked like the engine mounts had sagged by taking the load off of them.

So by mesuring from the top of the exhaust tips to the exhaust body openings I found that jacking the engine would bring up the exhaust up by 3/16 of an inch on both side....

So am I safe to say that knowing that there is suppose to be a little play to absorb vibrations, at this point my mounts do not need replacement and can wait till next spring.???

Just replace them if you're unsure. They're pretty cheap (I got the Corteco ones, which I think are OEM), and really easy to replace. Jacking the engine up is 3/4 of the job.

A couple things to ask/answer for your (and our) benefit. How many miles on the car? Are they the original mounts? Is it doing anything unusual (noise, vibration, sloppy shifting, etc.)? How much track duty has it seen? How much do you plan to do? Also, transmission mounts take a pretty good beating at the "hands and feet" of a less than competent driver, especially on the track. Have you asked the shop to check these?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Right... 2007 Carrera 4 with 70000miles.

To my knowledge, it has never been tracked. I am having the hardest time finding the maintenance that was done by the previous owners, except for the one from whom I bought the car from. From him, I know the coolant reservoir was changed , and same goes for the suspension shocks and top plates, (whatever these plates are). And other stuff.

The car shifts very smoothly and doesn't vibrate in any gear or at any speed.

Reason why I mention changing them next year rather than now unless I know that they need to be changed urgently, is that I plan on having exhaust work done next year and am under the impression that the engine mounts and water pump are 2 items that are easier to tackle when the exhaust is off.... am I wrong to think that???

Or should I not take a chance and change the motor mounts and water pump asap.??

2009 C2S 133K miles

I did mine at 100K..... the passenger side was down a tiny bit..... did it really need it? Probably not. 997.1 is a bit different from .2 ... nut is different. My write up here: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...s-porsche.html

Peace

Plugs and water pump are easier with the exhaust removed. Mounts will probably last longer if they need to, or replace them now while you're doing work in that area. 75k-100k is where they seem to start sagging and you can feel the engine weight moving around. The RSS semi-solid motor mounts are a nice upgrade to the stock ones. When I installed those into my car at around 40k miles, I moved my old OEM mounts to my wife's car that had about 85k miles on it at the time and tossed hers.

I find it hard to believe that Tech has never replaced motor mounts...

I would wait till you have the exhaust off as job will be a bit easier. Not a difficult job. You indicate that there is no vibration, no noise or sloppy shifting, so I would be very confident that they will be fine till next year or even to the 100,000 mile mark as Bruce mentioned.

You don't need to take the exhaust off. Takes 30 mins including jack time to do

+1 to this. I did the RSS on my 2009 997.2 and I am very happy with the results.

I have RRS mounts in my 2005 C2S. My car is currently at Flat 6 Innovations Jake told me today that the semi solid mounts like the RRS do improve handling and shifting, but can also rob 5 to 10 HP due to the knock sensor interpreting the additional vibration as detonation and trimming the engine back

i may order an OEM set and do a driving feel / power comparison. I won’t be scientific but I’d like to know.

Thank you much guys, all your info is greatly appreciated and noted.

Given the vibration free state of the car, I might wait it out a bit, unless I decide to go ahead with the water pump, coil packs and plugs and motor mounts and the 3 idler pulleys...

Not sure why everything is underlined, bht hey?!?😜

2009 C2S Cab... 31K Miles...

My indy just replaced mine last week... 1 hour of labor plus parts

He said one of the mounts was "weeping". He offered if he should change one or both, I opted for both. Went with OEM since the car is babied and rarely driven hard

3/16ths movement is nothing. Your mounts sound totally fine

Yeah thanks, will wait it out till next year or over the winter if I need thinkering time with the car. Unless I decide to do other jobs that would require removing air box thus making things too obvious to wait.

Here is a relevant thread regarding this very issue. Some other data points there.
