Posting on behalf of my uncle who is not internet savvy. He has a 2005 997 carerra with 50k miles. Does not drive it aggressively and has it maintained at his local "german shop". This past week he noticed a "rattling" sound that got louder and faster as he accelerated. His mechanic told him its a problem that is known to happen in these cars and results in engine failure. He sent me a photo of what appears to be oil with metal fragments in it. The mechanic is saying he needs to either replace the engine or rebuild this engine. No check engine lights. Does this sound like IMS failure to you guys? If so is there a cheaper option? He is charging 10k for a rebuild and 20k for a motor swap. Thanks in advance.
IDK, I happen to think it could be legit. I was definitely anti IMS hype, but replaced my bearing in my 05 with 49k miles and there was a very slight amount of play in it. It wasnt making metal, but it was eventually going to fail. Sorta changed my opinion on the whole thing.
Any plastic in the filter to go along with the metal? Could be a failed timing chain tensioner or paddle. They could boroscope the cylinders through the plug holes and look for evidence of metal debris and gouging in the cylinders. If the ball bearings came out, the inside of the engine won't look good.
If this is a Troll---->I've noticed these people with IMS drama and Bore Scoring drama have trouble finding dates and stay home way more than they should.
Any way to get a dating site linked to the IMS & Bore Scoring threads??

Great idea. I only date chicks with bore scoring. 🤗
Thanks for all the responses. What more information may I provide? this is the photo he sent
Is the metal ferrous - does it stick to a magnet? If so, that's bad news and parts of the IMS ball bearings. If not, further investigation is needed, probably pulling the sump to see what's trapped outside the swirl pot areas. Pulling the sump also gives them a view of the bottoms of the cylinders to see what the walls look like and through the spark plug holes they can see the tops of the cylinders and what the tops of the pistons look like.
From what little I know.....do NOT start that engine. Was it running and he shut it down, or did it stop on it’s own? Is that pic taken by him or his shop? Did he drain the oil?
